It just happened again. compiz was enabled. (red herring?)
gconf-editor showed that /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/left_handed is
true (as does gnome-mouse-properties).
This resets leftiness:
$ gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/left_handed --type boolean
false
I get the same behavior sporadically on a HP NW8440 with suspend/resume.
I suspect, but have not verified, an association with using None,
Normal, or Extra Visual Effects (i.e., metacity or compiz). Since
toggling Visual Effects also causes other config changes such as window

It appears that when the computer sits idle, it is unloading unused modules
(evdev) and then when I use the mouse it reloads it with the "default" settings
again.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
