I am the person rCX is referring to in comment 10. I have the xscreen
saver package installed and when I try to install the Pacman game from
the Ubuntu Software Center I get the following.
Unpacking pacman (from .../pacman_10-17ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/
Someone has reported that installing the Pacman game while using
xscreensaver's Pacman screensaver leads to errors. See
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1382972 for details. The user
tried installing the game from Karmic's Software Center.

Since the bug is in gnome-screensaver and Ted was assigned to the
xscreensaver task, I've assigned him to this one.

In investigating this, I also came up with the following patch against
Jaunty. It simply hardcodes PATH to something sane and fixes the
problem. This is pretty crude, but at least fixes it.

Marking xscreensaver task as Invalid. It launches the pacman screensaver
and not the game. This looks to be because hack_environment() in
subprocs.c puts the DEFAULT_PATH_PREFIX at the front of the PATH, so the
screensaver is found before the game.

While this is xscreensaver-data-extras triggers the problem, the cause
is because the screensaver doesn't clean out its PATH. gnome-screensaver
is affected by this.

This is simply because /usr/games is in the user's PATH. Best thing to
do would be to sanitize the PATH.
