creation of hardware nodes (which happens to work for me and be
discarded at next boot) is completely irrelevant to the function of rng-

I went back to 8.10, and looks like my memory of running this OK on 8.10
false, it was 8.04 with a patched kernel.
On 8.10 I get the same error message as I got with Jaunty Alpha 2, but
it looks like it does not matter after all: what is needed is to
activate the following line in /etc/default/rng
