I wonder if you are seeing a heat problem on your machine? You could
try seeing if you can keep the machine CPU busy and see if the same
thing happens?
(My favorite way to keep a core hot is md5sum /dev/zero )

Cold machine: 14 min until shutdown
than 30 min md5sum /dev/zero : 4 min until shutdown
heat may be of influence to the problem but in no other program! (I use
a lot of high cpu consuming scientific programms over a long time
without any spontaneous shutdowns...)
