"alsa-driver" is a package that is not installed on these systems.
I have started a new report (bug#461577) for Intel 82801H HD Audio
Controllers.
You should be able to find your audio card by typing the command:
lspci | grep 'Audio'
If that command gives you nothing, just do 'lspci' and go swim
How can I list my hardware?
Also, I don't have an alsa-driver package, either installed or
available. Is that the right package to file the bug?

linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic did not fix this problem for
me. I still have to go into alsamixer after a reboot and select the
Digital Mic from the Input Sources list.

linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic generic
or if using PAE kernel
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic generic-pae

Testing on today's 2.6.31-14.47 with backports on 64 bit karmic.
Changing the alsamixer settings as I described above continues to work
but the settings do not survive a reboot.

After changing the Mic settings in alsamixer, the microphone now works.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to change those settings
in the sound preferences, but that's another issue.

First am reassigning this to the linux kernel package.
Next, I've asked Marc to retest with 2.6.31-14 and also make sure the
Digitla Input Source is set properly, currently it doesn't appear to be
set to Digital Mic 1:

I finally got mic input back on 2.6.31-14 (I hadn't noticed I didn't
have it on 2.6.31-13) by playing with alsamixer
setting Mic Jack to Mic In and Digital Input Source to Digital
Hopefully this will withstand a reboot. Sound input was fine on
previous 2.6.31 kernels (11 ?).
