It'd be nice to have some way to overwrite /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules

That is good enough for me, but I did a
GTK_IM_MODULE_FILE=/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-ipa.so gedit
and the input method shown in gedit was still my system one. Am I doing
something wrong?

Why isn't setting the environment variable GTK_IM_MODULE_FILE enough?
[However, it needs to be done pretty early on though, in your .xsession
or so, so all programs pick it up]

Adding "en" in /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules, cedilla works fine, but only
in gtk programs.
