This is NOT duplicate of Bug #458482
This is a regression issue, introduced at/around: Ubuntu 10.10
This is a Syslinux issue, not a boot issue (per se).
It is "not always possible" to boot and install Ubun

Thank you for providing more detail on your issue. FAT16 should not be
an acceptable format for startup disks. usb-creator should always format
the disk as FAT32. This is explained in Bug #296160.
Could you please test formatting the disk with usb-creator by selecting

OK, looking back at a couple of (literal) screenshots and some brief
notes that I made yesterday.
If the usb is formatted FAT16 and I choose "Make Startup Disk" then the
resultant usb if mounted shows all of the files, gparted shows that it
is fat16, bootable. This usb fails to boot wit
Paul, could you please let me know if you get a blank blinking

message (as in this bug) or a "no operating system" error message (as in

Startup Disk Creator failing to create bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.04
https://
parted version: 2.2-5ubuntu5
I have tried with an 8GB usb which 'Disk Utility' reports as:
Partition Type: W95 FAT32 (0x0b)
Partition Flags: Bootable
Type: FAT (32-bit version)
and also a 2GB usb which was formatted FAT16 by Win XP
Both result in an unbootable usb.
In the case of the 2G FAT16
could people confirm if usb stick formatted with fat32. Also what
version of parted is running on system (please ensure system is up to
date with latest parted for lucid).
