Did you see any error message shown on the command line login screen?
If not, the issue might be related to gdm because you could boot but gdm
didn't show up.

I have tried what you suggested. However Grub did not work in the way
you described. I used the suggested commands in grub boot menu to delete
the words you suggested and booted. It went to login at command line and
I couldn't because I did'nt know how get any further.

Please try to boot your computer without usplash to confirm if this bug
can really be attributed to usplash by following these steps:
1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
