This would have been the squashfs glitch we fixed just before the final

The altnerative installer makes copies all the files fails at 76% when
configuring Gnome.

I burned a new CD at a slower speed (8x) and the same thing happens. I
will try to extract a /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman.

Did you check the disc for defects? You may have been burning it on too
high of a speed which sometimes can cause defects in the CD.
