Thanks for the response. The mic is unmuted. The problem is not to do
with Skype, Skype was a way of solving the problem. The problem exists
after the machine is booted and before Skype runs hence it's not Skype.
My work around was to write a script that 'opens' the webcam during the
boot
Please make sure that your mic is first unmuted; see Sound Preferences
Input Mute
You may also find that you wish to disallow Skype from managing your
microphone settings.
