I've found another workaround. Make sure you press Alt, then shift. I've been experimenting a bit with xev, and apparently it's only if you hit shift and then alt that X translates the Alt_L to Meta_L. If you hit Alt_L first it works as expected. I'm guessing this behavior is an old hack to be

I can confirm that Shift+Alt+anything doesn't work with 8.04 (LTS). In my everyday work this prevents me from using all refactor commands in Eclipse (such as rename, shift-alt-r) and all quick execution (shift-alt-x, t to run unit tests). Alt+key works. Shift+key works. Ctrl+Shift+key works.
