If you use the official multiverse repositories, VMware-player can be
installed on both Edgy and Feisty.

It seems that you are using an unofficial repository, so we can't
support it.
However, there is a version of vmware-player on the repos. You can
install it.

I confirm that vmware-player installs without problems after a thorough
cleanup of my list of repositories. Bug was on my side.

What version of Ubuntu are you running? Edgy Eft?
And which package have you tried to install with Synaptic?
