Also failed to reproduce right now. Difference between reporting and
now: I have network-manager disabled again. Will check again with
network manager running later on.
Sam, Sebastien: Do avoid accidently focusing on network-manager as part
of the problem - did you have it running?

on feisty just tried
cd /etc/network/
sudo mv interfaces interfaces.hide
gksu network-admin
and it works fine. if i make any changes and exit it creates a new
interfaces file. though this lacked a 'lo' entry
