Ok, I found the problem: HUD only works if you make use of the global
menu.
As I did not like the global menu on my 24 inch screen, I removed the
package. That also leaves HUD inoperable as the commands for HUD are
read from the global menu

I think HUD is a great concept, but I have the same problem that it too
quickly provides non focused-application results. Is there a way to
force it to only return results from the focused application?

But in your case it could be feature instead of a bug.
To make sure, people do not get me wrong:
In my case I will not get the application specific menu items at all.
I only get the menu items of totally unrelated applications (mostly
dropbox or systems set
I'm having this issue as well.
A bit more specific, I have the Dropbox application installed, when I
use HUD, I get the options from the current application, but also from
the Dropbox system status as well.
To recreate:
1) Open any application (ex: Firefox)
2) Open HUD (press Alt button)

Same problem. Also the top icon on the left changes to other
applications while typing. See attachment. I started out in GIMP but it
changed to some icon I'm not even sure what is.
