Update. It is a weird issue. I've gone to my preferences, changed the GTK engine and it works. I then went back to the older engine, and it also works. However, I still get some weird symbol errors (!) --- yet it works (!?). /home/ $ /usr/bin/emacs /usr/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/keramik.so:
