@mat: Yes , it is not the same camera. Kindly file a separate bug using
the following command, from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug cheese
remember to select the first option when prompted with a dialogue , [it
will collect debugging information from cheese]

[pwc] , Please execute the following command, as it will automatically
gather debugging information, in a terminal:

Here is the output from lsusb just in case :

I have upgraded to lucid and since then video recording in cheese is broken for
higher resolutions.
This is a regression as in previous versions I never met this problem.

Reproduced the crash in karmic on cheese 2.28.0-0ubuntu1.
Problem still exists. Cheese still freezes when trying to record video.
