I am also bugged with this issue when I suspend to ram and then resume.
As in the above reports ctrl+f1, ctrl+f7 fixes the problem as does
typing in a text document as well as changing the workspace with
ctrl+alt+cursor.

@Tom Inglis: not sure if this will be the same for other updates, but it

The line should be something like:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset

However, since the variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT is set 2 times in
the config file, the 2nd affectation will override the 1rst.

Ubuntu takes a long time to login: remains firm after typing the
password for 10 seconds after that show desktop icons. Disabling the
floppy from the BIOS resolves the issue.
