logs are slightly different. I installed 18.04 on a new ssd two days
ago. Each time I come back to my machine after leaving it idle, I find
my harddrive is full, and syslog has grown to 9-10GB.

I installed upstream kernel, also then reviewed logs I attached from my bug
report.
I think cpus are being managed just fine in 4.15.0-22-generic and 4.17.
There were ACPI errors - but googling indicates these are likely
triggered by programming

If it needs testing in artful in order to get fixes into Pike UCA, then
IMO your process is broken. I think I spent more than enough time on
this, if you insist to prefer keeping to distribute faulty packages, so
be it.

I also built ubuntu-bionic: Ubuntu-4.15.0-23.25 reverting
d8a077b6271ef3d7620f0e95d4a343ec1661fe5d (which is the same commit in
the ubuntu-bionic repo).
I see that there is a brief text terminal between grub and the ubuntu
loading screen, but at least it seems to boot reliably with a second
