Dear Jeremy,
I downloaded an ISO for Ubuntu 10.04 RC and installed it on my USB as a
liveUSB. After booting off of the USB successfully, I was able to
suspend and resume 3 times without any problem.

I also got the compiz updates from karmic-proposed yet the crash is
still happening when I try to detect my external monitor. Sigh...

controller). I can confirm that no crash happens with the following
sequence:
Boot laptop with external monitor unplugged,
Disable visual effects,
Plug in the monitor,
Type xrandr --auto in Terminal,
Go to Display Prefs,
