try the suggestion I made. it worked for me is all I can say. I hear
reports that it doesn't work on all machines,but then everyone has set
their machine up differently. Best of luck

Glad I could help you Franz,seems to be a problem causing people to want
to pull their hair out.. Easy enuff fix either way you do it.. I
mentioned the GUI as some ppl are not too adept at CLI. Best of luck!

Easy fix. Install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic package
through synaptic and then install the Alsa sound package and needed
dependancies. thats all i did.. once the modules are loaded open the
alsa mixer GUI and set both internal and front mic sliders to 100%. you
should be good to go..
I forgot to mention i am using 9.10 UNR Karmic.. it instals pulse audio
by default. the thing I did worked tho.. Good Luck!
