I am glad to report that this is resolved on the Gutsy Release Candidate
CD.
It asked me correctly to select a new user, details for installation
appeared correctly on the ready to install screen, and installation
went ok.

Trying to install Gutsy Beta from the Live CD, I reach the final page,
saying Your new operating system will now be installed with the
following settings, and the list underneath is empty.
(I didn't press 'continue' as I don't want to destroy

Settings) but even after leaving it there overnight it's still stuck at
the progress cursor and the only active button is cancel. Cancel does
work so technically the application isn't hung.

Well, I tried it now, and it seems fine, not sure what did the trick

Here it is after sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Interestingly, it
worked this time at 1024x768! The only quirk was that it says in the
preferences that the refresh rate was 50; yet the monitor itself, and
the nvidia-settings, said that it was 75. I used nvidia-settings to fix
the refresh rate

After just installing Feisty, I ran into this exact same problem. I
puzzled over it for quite a bit without figuring out what exactly was
expected of me. After reading the comments here, I am still very
confused. Hopefully this can be sorted out somehow.

Well, if that is so, perhaps Ubuntu should state clearly that only LTS
releases are meant to be 100% stable. As it is, Edgy is the first
download on ubuntu.com, and no mention is made about it being non-stable
in any way (all it says is that Dapper will be

Things are indeed significantly improved in beta5. I attach a screenshot
of the current status.
As you can see in the screenshot, the bottom contact name now appears ok
(the name is aligned to the right, as it should be, and is in legible

Sure, here is a screenshot (I blurred out the names irrelevant to this
bug).
The bug can be seen near the bottom, specifically the third contact from
the very bottom. This type of 'gibberish' is what I sometimes see in
other apps when Hebrew is displayed using the wrong codepage.

in the preferences is erased, i.e. empty. When the Homepage field is
non-empty - containing the default Edgy homepage, or even about:blank
- then things work fine.
