It's even put me in mind of setting up a separate Linux box just for audio (and possibly AV) work. Gentoo Linux has a sub-distribution explicitly designed for AV work. Ardour has been moved to this package class and isn't even available for the Linux I use on my desktop system. I'm

Thanks to those who replied to my question. I believe I already have a realtime kernel on this system (it's running kernel v2.6.23) but in any event I don't need that level of performance at this time. The box handles normal audio tasks just fine and tracks single streams of audio at CD sampling
