Stuart, Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I continued experimenting after I had posted my query and now I cannot log in to Kubuntu, presumably because it has 'lost' the Home folder. When trying to sign in I get the error message 'Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation'.
