Upgrading to ATI's Catalyst 10.6 driver fixed this problem. I strongly recommend that Ubuntu upgrade its fglrx package to this version or later, as suspend/resume functionality is part of what I think most people would consider a minimum standard of usability for a laptop. -- Thinkpad W500
