So I must have forgotten that procedure.

Generally if it’s the window you’re describing asking to use the “usual
AppleID” then the password it actually wants is your computer password.
(As it most likely has your AppleID password saved into a special encrypted
token), so it’s then asking you to enter your computer password
Thank you Peter … but I do not use safari to log in.
I do so manually.
However I looked where you suggested in Safari.
But it tells me it has no password recorded.
So back to square one !!

If I choose yes to this, my password will not work.
But if I choose “use a different Apple ID”
Then type in my usual “cha...@mac.com”
My password lets me in.
