words of wisdom

2000-04-30 Thread phred
Just exactly the right thing, at the right time, from the right guy, Chuck D:

The last straw was the CD period, when labels increased
their markup without raising artists' royalties in kind. At the
same time, record companies created the concept of a
disposable artist; with jacked-up marketing and promotional
costs, record companies stopped nurturing career artists.
They have been able to fatten profits by flipping small batches
of artists in and out.

That is today's music industry.

Well, Napster has been a thorn in that bull's side. By exposing
people to music, companies like Napster are creating new
fan interest and establishing a new infrastructure for unknown
artists to attract an audience -- a new radio for the new millennium.

This is on the New York Times website for the next day or so:

The new metacrawler (number 10) has both James Ruskin and Oliver Ho floating
a female vocal over funky techno drums. A friend thought the sample was
familiar: anyone?

On a completely different trip, I was wondering if anyone out there could
recommend some good techno with *tastefull* vocal samples. I really like
the mills' style of vocal use in 'if'- the vocals are there, but are
treated like any other instrument. They don't overpower the song.

-Yes it's E-MU's SP-1200 sampling drummachine. Check for E-MU machines at:

www.drummachine.com/newpages/emu_p.html

It's an old HIP-HOP grande classique, when talking about drummachines.
Public Enemy used them extensively, and so did everyone who had little more
to spend on their drummachines: It was and still IS very expensive. You can
search for used SP-1200's and IF someone is willing to sell theirs, it's
gonna cost you. ($650-$1500...)

E-MU brought that machine back to market few years ago, and it still cost
fuck-loads of money. In England it was like 2000£!!! It's a 12-bits sampling
machine!!! For that money you could get an AKAI MPC-60 or MPC2000 which are
more than simple d-machines

But I suppose there is something to love about them, since Todd Terry still
uses them (he had a couple if I remember correctly). That low resolution
sampling quality is one hit-factor in those old classic Todd Terry tracks
for sure, shitty drums and percussion sound so good when you know what
you're doing.

Those who have heard his Royal House LP know what I'm talking about: it
sounds like that whole album was processed thru some lo-fi filter! It sounds
so ghetto, that it makes TRAX output sound like a million dollar business!
(And that's something ;))

Is anybody familiar with this 12? That is, who's Hardcell and is Countdown
2000 the label?

i'm not sure who hardcell is exactly, i think he/they is swedish,
deffinitely sounds swedish.
countdown 2000 though, is johan bacto's label, there were 12
releases off it, guess what they were called :)

artists contributing to the series included misjah, johannes heil,
henrik b, etc.. very good series. there was a cd released with a
track from each release on it too.

Hardcell is Swedish producer Nils Danielsson. Hardcell
has eight or so releases to date on mostly on his own
Skunkworks label with a few others on Coax and
Countdown 2000. Hardcell also has two remixes on
the recent Mhonolink Palmsfield Road rmx ep on
Zync. The Countdown 2000 was Thomas
Krome's label that released one ep each month last
year leading up to the year 2000 - hence the name.
The ep you speak of was number 11 in the series
of Countdown 2000 releases. Here are some brief
discogs of each...

Hardcell releases:
. Hardcell: Skunkworks #1 12 (Skunkworks)
. Hardcell: Skunkworks #2 12 (Skunkworks)
. Hardcell: Skunkworks #3 12 (Skunkworks)
. Hardcell: Skunkworks #4 12 (Skunkworks)
. Hardcell: Reaction Control 2xlp (Skunkworks)
. Hardcell: Camping Pad 12 (Coax)
. Hardcell: November 12 (Countdown 2000)

Hardcell remixes on:
. Mhonolink: Palmsfield Road Remixed 12 (Zync)

Countdown 2000 label releases:
. Thomas Krome: January 12 (Countdown 2000 01)
. Henrik B: February 12 (Countdown 2000 02)
. Johan Bacto: March 12 (Countdown 2000 03)
. Mistress Barbara: April 12 (Countdown 2000 04)
. G-Force: May 12 (Countdown 2000 05)
