Ford owns Jaguar automobiles as well as some others (Volvo, Autin Marten,
Mazda...) but why the hell would they put a Jaguar on their Ford brand cars?
That's like putting a Rolls Royce label on a Toyota. Does it have anything
to do with the UR tune? I couldn't see them really trying to connect on this
level. It's just too deep a connection (Detroit Techno = UR's Jaguar) for a

Im pretty sure his disco revisited (emotional content?) ep on TP's Intagible

some obscure releases hes done that didn't see the light of day outside

This weekend i ran into an old KDJ record on Soul City, the label said it
was recorded in 1996. Is there someone who knows when he recorded his first

women and electronic music

2000-11-15 Thread b3kka
Hi everyone,

As some of you know i'm working on a paper about women and electronic music.
As there isn't much information about the topic in existing literature i'm
hoping that you will be willing to help me out by replying to this survey.
I'm interested in what you all think is going on here. It should take about
10-15 minutes to complete. If all goes well i might turn this into my
dissertation cuz i think it's a topic that definitely needs some more
attention and i'm totally interested in your experiences. If you have any
questions or would like to make any additional comments please feel free to
do so.

Please pass this along to any women you know who might be willing to take
the time to help me out. Thank you VERY much =))

WOMEN AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC

This questionnaire is intended for WOMEN over the age of 18. It will take
approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Your assistance is very much
appreciated. This research is being conducted as part of my course work for
a graduate level popular music studies course at the University of Iowa. I
hope to use the results gathered in the body of my term paper for the
course. The focus of the paper will be to examine women's relationship to
electronic music, via a discussion of interest, accomplishments, and
barriers. It is my hope that this paper will serve as the beginning of a
dialogue about women's interactions and experiences with electronic music
and its surrounding culture.

**I intend to link names to respondents in my research. However, I will
ensure confidentiality for respondents who indicate that they prefer
anonymity.**

PLEASE NOTE: BY COMPLETING THIS QUESTIONAIRE AND FORWARDING IT TO ME YOU ARE
GIVING ME PERMISSION TO USE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN MY RESEARCH. YOU
MUST BE OVER 18-YEARS-OLD TO COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE.

Please forward your responses to [EMAIL PROTECTED] by DECEMBER 1, 2000 (the

friend and would prefer to remain anonymous to myself please send your
responses to that person who will, after deleting any identifying
information (i.e. your email address and name) forward the questionnaire to
me.

If you have any questions regarding the questionnaire or the focus of my
research please feel free to contact me. Also, if you know of any one who
might be interested in completing this questionnaire, please forward it IN
ITS ENTIRETY (including this introduction) to that person.

I thank you for taking the time to read this and hope that you will be able

Please answer the following questions as honestly as possible. If there is
any question that you feel unwilling or unable to answer simply skip it and

WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

5. DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC INFLUENCES, NOT NECESSARILY EXPLICITLY RELATED
TO THE MUSIC/SCENE THAT HAVE INSPIRED AND/OR ENCOURAGED YOUR INVOLVEMENT?

6. DO YOU FEEL THAT WOMEN ARE REPRESENTED IN LITERATURE (BOOKS, MAGAZINES,
WEBSITES) PERTAINING TO THE SCENE? IF YES, ARE THEY REPRESENTED ACCURATEY?
PLEASE EXPLAIN.

7. WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT/RESPECT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE GOTTEN FROM YOUR MALE
COUNTERPARTS? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SOCIALIZE WITH/BE INCLUDED BY MEN IN

which initially grew out of an aphex twin list, i thought i should point
this out: years ago (maybe even 5?) aphex twin's music was being
used in commercials: i can remember the commercial for Pirelli in
particular because it won some awards. There are essentially 2
different kinds of music used in commercials:
a) unknown producers
who work 9-5 M-F and write television music for a living (and i'm
not knocking these people; they are many musicians who work in
the background and/or who have anonymous music-related dayjobs,
john tejada, for example, had/(has?) a dayjob doing sample cds; personally,
my dayjob is pding at the local campus/community radio station;
the bills *do* have to be paid, anyway, i'm offtopic); they (the unknown
producers)
are often asked to *imitate* certain songs/sounds/etc and they do
this because it is their job, and,
b) situations such as this with atkins
where a track such as atkins' is used in a commercial. i'd much rather
hear, personally, b): atkins' track in a commercial with atkins getting
paid and proper credit, than a) with a ford focus commercial where
someone who paid to make a track *like* atkins'. and, regardless
of how we feel about ford/cars/etc, i can speak from experience
re: an artists' music being used in commercials: i'm no atkins (far
from it), but my music has been used in radio ads, theatre, film,
documentaries, etc, and it is extremely flattering (and even gratifying)
to know someone wants to use *your* music (out of a myriad of choices)
as the music bed, for whatever it is worth (and i'm not talking money
here), instead of just some anonymous beat. tons of thought and money
is put into what music gets used in a commercial for a huge company
like ford. heck, mills said his biggest goal is to do soundtracks and he
did the metropolis soundtrack on his own (initially) because he just *had
to* do that kind of thing to satisfy himself. we shouldn't take
this for granted (artists we respect doing/having their music used
in commercials and/or doing soundtracks)
and we should feel proud that juan atkins' music is
used in this commercial and not a moby or fatboy slim or unknown.
not wanting to drag this out, just wanted to add my perspective.
pardon the rambling, i haven't been to bad yet (due to my dayjob)

And not for me to drag this out any further. I started this thread.
Ford isn't exploiting Juan in the sense of not paying him. I'm sure
he'll be paid handsomely. Techno will survive Ford.

Ford commercial aside, there are two cultures in the US -- Mass consumer
culture -- designed and manufactured to serve the financial needs of
stockholders, and the real culture and commerce that arises from human
interactions. Contrast a Walmart and a Sunday Flea Market and you'll see
the distinction I'm making.

I believe art is impossible in mass consumer culture. The goals of
consumer culture and art are incompatible. Art seeks to communicate
the unique and idiosyncratic, and consumer culture seeks to standardize
and enforce the status quo.

This doesn't mean that musicians can't make good art and still get paid.
A lot of money comes out of underground dance music, and some people are
getting, if not rich, at least comfortable from it. But the whole
decentralized DIY ethic of dance music exists almost entirely outside
the major label system. The worldwide network of independent
distributors, labels, specialty vinyl record shops, clubs, etc.

If Ford, or whomever, decides to license tracks, I do not blame people for
taking the money. Who knows, maybe the Focus commercial will spur a few people
to actually seek out Juan's music. THAT'S FINE BY ME.

What bothers me is the feeling that they're appropriating something for
commercial reasons, with no concern for the cultural context and artistic
history involved. I feel the same way about acts like Deep Forest, who have
made huge bank by exploiting the music of Pygmies.

there's a version on juan atkins wax tracks the unmixed double (or triple)
album featuring tracks from the mix he did for wax trax. other tracks on
that compitation: sharivari/a number of names, m7/maurizio,
belizbeha/belizbeha(clear horizons mix), nude photo/rhythim is rhythim, and
many others.
you can also try to see if you can order the original (repress), i had
ordered it about a year and a half, or two years ago at a recordshop, and
received it last friday. so maybe metroplex repressed it in case of growing
demand in the near future due to the commercial. otherwise you can always go
for metroplex-002 with No-UFO's (D-MIX) on it. this shouldn't be too hard to
find, Rushhour (in amsterdam) had a whole lot of these laying around a
couple of weeks ago.

hope this helps,

 Finally,
I saw the commercial spot last night on VH1 and checked the Ford Motor
company site today (www.ford.com) checking for two things: a Quicktime
 video
of the commercial (most companies will have this on their pages after
 airing
a new broadcast advert) and some kind of acknowledgement of the track
 being
used (like VW did with Nick Drake's Pink Moon). I found neither.
While I thought the tv spot was good and the music editing was very good,
 I
was really disappointed not to see anything about either the music or the
 ad
on Ford's website...did anyone else check their website for these things?
On the Focus 247 page there is a catagory for music (it's kind of a
lifestyle section to go with the car). What's on it? Friggin' Garth
 Brooks!
Obviously, the commercial doesn't signal a huge revolutionary change in
direction for Ford. It's a tv spot that will air for a while then
 disappear
quietly. That's it...then it's back to trainspotting and next gigs here on

 313. So I don't think we should get our undies in a bunch and wonder if
 this
means the end of good techno and the corporate mind control machine taking

 over.
For the time we should be happy that Mr. Atkins is gettin' some green.

 in
 a
MAJOR commercial, and hopefully paying him accordingly ???

That kind of mass recognition is long past due for the Godfather of
 Techno.

And isn't it the POINT that you're gratified by knowing it's Juan's
 track
underneath the commercial and the masses don't ? Would you be more
 happy
 if
they were using a Crystal Method or Fatboy Slim or Moby track like
 they
 do
everything else? Dang, let the man have his due, for God's sakes.

I also saw this commercial last night and the subsequent list discussion
 today.
It seems to me that Ford was saying two things...

An acknowledgement of the forward thinking and innovative aspect related
 to
 Detroit Techno - the music

 AND

Ford's own attempt to impress that they're trying to innovate with their
offerings (in particular the Focus) with their own
Detroit Techno(logy) within the automotive realm.

The music isn't doesn't have sole possession of the term Detroit
 Techno(logy)
seeing as cars have been built there for the longest time..
think of it this way too.. Before the electronics and computer companies
of Silicon Valley identified that region as a technological center in
 the
 US
Detroit with its automotive industry was able to say that long before
 this current age

I think they were giving props to both the music and their own
 products... in some way...

I guess I think too much, and hope for the best..

I believe art is impossible in mass consumer culture. The goals of
consumer culture and art are incompatible. Art seeks to communicate

that's a tidy oversimplification. art, in an idealized sense, is difficult
to combine with consumer/pop culture but certainly not impossible. in fact i
find this a rather conservative, elitist argument of what art is..
reminiscent of adorno and horkheimer high culture blah blah. Art is in the
eye of the beholder and i think that is about all that can be definitively
said about it. in my book, the new pepsi can is art. maybe not particularly
inspired or unique but these are subjective judgements.

What bothers me is the feeling that they're appropriating something for
commercial reasons, with no concern for the cultural context and artistic
history involved. I feel the same way about acts like

this is a valid concern, but i think there is some attention paid due to the
fact that the slogan detroit techno is used. since they actually use no
ufo's this is more than just commercial appropriation;the slogan is a double
entendre that acknowledges the music. i think there is cultural respect here
in that they purposefully chose no ufo's, all detroit, to accompany a
recognizable detroit icon, ford. that's some history recognition right
there. instead of paying phatdawg mcfly they're paying juan, and that is
some very tangible respect in my book. if this was a revlon ad with some
models showing off lipstick as they jam to no ufo's, i'd be more concerned.
but i don't see any damage done..

Deep Forest, who have
made huge bank by exploiting the music of Pygmies.

im no deep forest fan but i think this is a harsh assessment, to label as
exploitation, especially since there is some level of art involved. is
it unfair to pygmies? and if so, because they use pygmy music period, or
because they've made money? it gets complicated and very subjective -- how
much of deep forest's sound is truly pygmy music, are the pygmy artists
paid fairly and proportionately, etc? i think only pygmies can really
answer. it's certainly not cut dry..commerce art and culture are in a
constant tug of war that can be interpreted in infinite ways...only the
victims can determine whether they are truly victims or not.

Re: KDJ discography

2000-11-15 Thread AeOtaku
Yes, the Soul City 12 is listed
on the discog, under other releases.
It is Soul Sounds #1 with Winter
Breeze, Yesterdays, etc. etc. It's
one of his best EPs (next to KDJ7,
KDJ24 and KDJ25).

Kenny's first EP was the Moody Mann EP
done as Kenny Dixon Jr. featuring
Norma Jean Bell that came out on
New Jersey's Grassroots records, a
label I have never heard of aside
from this release (which is GR005).
This, as far as I'm concerned, is about
the rarest Detroit EP I've ever heard of.

His next EP was the Moody Traxx EP on
KDJ. That's KDJ1. KDJ1 and KDJ2 are
records I've never seen for sale/trade.
It's likely that I'll live another fifty
years and go to my grave not hearing those
at the rate of success I've had trying
to find copies.

I've heard there will be another round of
KDJ repressings. Anyone who knows him,
please feel free to pass along these
suggestions:

1) No more one-sided repressings.
2) Do the pressings with the original tracks.
3) Repress the records that haven't ever
   been repressed (KDJ1, 2, and 9 especially).
4) Put some of the white label only tracks
(KDJ19, 23, and 28 whites) on the repressings.
5) Repress the damn first Three Chairs already.

BTW, anybody out there who wants to
drop their KDJ28 white label on me,
let me know. I'll trade just about
anything in my non-KDJ/Theo collection.

I think you're right about that interpretation Dan. It's only if you have
prior knowledge of the tune and it's origins that you understand the double
meaning of Detroit Techno Ford Focus. What can be said is that someone at
the ad agency is a techno fan. It's usually someone within the ad agency
scouting out potential music sourcesnot within the company being
advertised. The Ford spot might be a different case, but from my experience
in the ad business it works this way. Someone in the ad agency's creative
department has a big smile on their face right now because they are a techno
fan and they got to finally do what they wanted to...express their love for
techno.
