Re: [313] X-mix on vinyl

CD's are all mixed (obv) but records are all separate. I think that all of
them are on vinyl as I have Garnier, Hawtin Aquaviva, Clarke, Saunderson,
MR C, and have seen others about.

missing some tracks that are on the cd. but then the cd's are also missing
tracks that are on the videos.
I do not know about the rest of them but if memory serves not all were

How would you describe your style of writing music and musical
policy?

I always start an idea with beats. Getting those right by themselves
is really important to me, beats have to be able to work on their
own. I'll play with different patterns and juggle hits around until
all they all sit well with each other. Using mathematical rules on
beats can yield interesting results, experimentation with hit
placement and velocity creates interesting rhythms that can kind of
roll over each other.

After beats I'll start working on bass, getting something solid down
with a sound I like, then working on variations of the main line.
Once beats and bass are done, I start considering lead sounds and by
this stage I'm beginning to get a feel for where the track is going
and the vibe of it. I also start thinking of how I'm going to use
these sounds - what I start with, introduce, go into/out of, how
sounds will 'talk' to each other and how I want the track as a whole
to sound and feel.

Sampling and previewing sounds takes about 80% of my production time.
10% would be coming up with basslines, leads, etc. and 10% would be
hard disk recording/mixing. Finding the right sounds is most
important. When selecting sounds I consider texture, frequency range,
brightness and contrast.

How did you first become interested or invovled in writing music?

I've always been interested in music. I think I had three piano
lessons and that was enough, I hated it! I much preferred
experimenting on my own with piano. My first experience with synths
was with a Roland JX3P and an old analogue mono synth. The sounds
amazed me, I would just sit and press buttons and twiddle knobs for
hours. I've had a passion for computers since my introduction to them
when I was about 10, so it was kind of natural to merge music and
computing together. I had bought an old Amiga 2000 second hand to do
graphics with and discovered that there was a sequencer/sampler
program on the hard drive as well. I started using that until I got
into midi, soon after which I bought a PC and it's all gone on from
there. My older brother has always been musical too, which was
definitely influential.

Any favourite artists, influential DJs or must-have labels?

It's difficult to pin one person down and and say 'They're my
favourite artist'. I like most of the Reprazent stuff, Guidance
Records, Wicked Beats Sound System, Luke Slater, Freq Nasty, LTJ
Bukem, Blueboy, Photek, Thievery Corporation, Curtis Mayfield among
heaps of others.

Want to name-drop any other peoples' names???

Really helpful people musically? Lo-Key Fu and Jase From Outta Space -
two good friends of mine. Paul Gamblin who dj's here in Perth has
always been supportive, too. Big respect to him. Also Audio Cephlon,
Smoulder, B-Jam, Sardi, Krank, Greg Packer, Echoic, Static, The
Sirius Project, Elemental - all quality Perth producers as well as
everyone else too numerous to mention.

Where can we see or listen to you playing?

Every now and then I'll do a live set somewhere, but not that often.
My most recent tracks can be heard or downloaded from
www.mp3.com/scope1 which is my website. I get rotation on RTR-FM, a
Perth community radio station which supports underground music.

Which directions do you think dance music will take in the future?

The one thing that will be certain about dance music is that it will
always be made for the dancefloor. It seems to be mostly accidents
that end up spawning new sounds and genres, which is exciting because
it means it can't be predicted. Who can predict the result of an
accident? The constant flow of new equipment and technology will I
think continue to play a part in how and what is made. Elements of
different styles will continue to be fused together to create new
styles.

 What excites you now?

Slower, clean cut breakbeat made from fresh, tight drum sounds and

Quote from the liner notes:
[...] I have tried to showcase an array of artists from the stable, some very
well known and others... hidden gems... as well as the variety of music that
they have to offer. It is tough to showcase such a varied and eclectic
catalogue in a 7-minute mix. Not many labels (like Force Inc) can provide such
range. A quick funky start into the meaty, funky and analogue tekky side with a
taste of some of their deeper and eclectic sounds... a wind down of about teh
minutes that for me could have been a whole CD... a quick ride through over a
dozen years of great sounds and memories with the anxious anticipation of more
to come!

'twas a really good night out, he played a pretty varied set - using
FinalScratch which was awesome to watch. I do miss being able to read the
labels though to find out the 'name of this track just played, it's sooo goood'.
And now I better get to bed before I fall off this chair. : )
Take care,

Anya

Re: [313] The Tao of Mills

2001-11-18 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I am almost 99 percent certain this was an e-mail (written) interview. I
think Jeff maybe writes a little more formally than he speaks. This often
happens with e-mail interviews, people are more aware of the written word
and approach the interview differently. I have to say Jeff is extremely
generous with his e-mail interviews, a lot of artists write one sentence
answers, whereas he puts time and thought into them! But I don't think
people realise that while he is intellectually curious he has a good sense
of humour which is part of that optimism. I think that obliqueness you refer
to is a product of his relativistic outlook which is the thing that most
fascinates me about Mills - it takes a lot of mental discipline to be
relativistic about things!

This was a great read!

Incidentally I expect/anticipate HYPER detailed reports of the Agents Of
Change party on this list!! :)

I'm going to completely disregard the thread that unrolled from Jeff
Mills into particle physics...

The thing that mosts fascinates me about Jeff Mills is the way that he
speaks is a little fuzzy meaningwise. It makes me want to put on my
green eyeshade and copy edit for him. You KNOW what's he's getting at
but he uses words that are a little off from the meaning he intends.
It's a little like he's translating from another language.

Parts I loved:

His explanation of the title Every Dog Has His Day
where he breaks it down literally. I guess it is an English Language
colloquialism, but it's not that obscure. It is a good avoidance
of stating directly what HE meant by it.

Often, I can feel and see the things that words can not say and numbers
cannot calculate.

Perceiving the unknown in hopes to survive the unexpected.

...as our society advances, we will discover more frequently and
dealing with those discoveries must be met with a better understanding
of our own limitations.

The usage of discover is intriguing -- it could mean 'we will discover new
things' but it's more general -- it's using 'discover' as an active
verb with no object. This act of discovery is generic and open form. If
you know what you're looking for you're not really discovering anything
new.

... [time] is the very thing we do not understand but, yet we try to
make sense of it and from guessing what it is, most of us settle and build
our lives. Chasing the meaning of time is resonably beyond us so, we can do
nothing but wait. It is this waiting that is fascinating.

Whoa. That's a tail-swallowing snake of a paragraph if ever ther was.

A new label from Glasgow, together with Peacemaker, Organica, Rei Loci and

melodic yet progressive Detroit funk tracks in which the analogue bass
still
leaves space for digital sounds. Breaks which open boundaries like B12
