Re: (313) [313] Tracklisting on a Ferox EP.
i jotted the tracklist down on the label of mine: a1 dan curtin mike filly - the longest night a2 the invisibles - estamos perdidos b1 idiot savant - rudiment sketch b2 fusion - cube of the blues (ian o'brien rework) the dc and m.f. is one of their best, up there with the best poff! i never got much into the rest, havent checked it in awhile tho.. jt hey folks. can anyone provide me with a tracklisting for FER028? it's the further adventures in techno soul sampler. i think one track is ian o'brien. The A1 is Dan Curtin (possibly in his Purveyors of Fine Funk guise), and the B2 is Ian O'Brien, but I can't remember what the other two were - they weren't labelled on the 12 but I think I did find out at one point. If I remember I'll let you know... Cheers, Tom _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
(313) Mixes and tracks on mp3!
Further to the recent thread about websites with mp3 mixes, and the interest in the Wide booty mixes, I've put up a new page at: http://www.sharesite.org/music.html This features some booty mixes, and some that are more predominantly techno or house, and will be updated regularly. It's also got some new tracks produced by myself, for anyone who used to visit the old brelson.com before it got turned into a porn site! That page will be updated pretty regularly with new mixes and tracks from myself and Guy, so if you're hungry for 313-flavoured mp3 mixes, or some nice home-spun tracks, check back regularly. Sorry for the spammage but quite a few people have asked for passwords to the Wide website download area, so there seems to be sufficient justification for posting this short-cut to the more up-to-date stuff :) Enjoy! (313) Carl Craig Interview
There's a really good interview with Carl Craig at www.tranzfusion.net (I think that's right). I just came across this last night and I think this sheds some light on that Nelly Hot In Herre debate we had a few weeks ago. This is why I defended Nelly (plus I think he's a cool cat, focussed and talented). If you asked Puffy why he makes the music he does he would say something similiar. It also relates to the UR/Jaguar debate - indirectly - with my point being that you have to consider the context before making value judgements. Skrufff: Hip hop culture still seems to be mainly about money and front, why? Carl Craig: ³That¹s black American culture. If you look at the history of most people of African descent in different countries their concept is to be kings. The concept is, We¹ve been oppressed for so long, we¹ve got to get (what¹s) ours¹. Another factor is that when you look at popular culture what really sells are records about money.² Skrufff: Yet you and a lot of the Detroit techno people don¹t seem so obsessed with money? Carl Craig: ³Yeah that¹s because we¹re not hailing from the tenement projects (public housing estates) where there were drugs taking over not only the projects but whole neighbourhoods too. ... When you look at a lot of hip hop and the pattern of hip hop it¹s about being from the projects and being poor, trying to scrape together money and always hustling. From our background, a hustle is a lot different.²
(313) George Clinton Answers Techno#8217;s Greatest Question
Found this article on the net, made me laugh Legendary funkateer George Clinton has finally revealed what he thought of Derrick May#8217;s classic description of Detroit techno as sounding #8220;like George Clinton and Kraftwerk stuck in an elevator, in typically robust fashion. Speaking to Australian journalist Cyclone recently, he chuckled when asked what he#8217;d really create if he genuinely got stuck with the Germans in the aforementioned lift. Well, some funny lil' babies, that's for sure. We sho' f**k 'em in the butt! You'd definitely come up with some lil' battery-operated children that won't 'techno' for an answer... You'd probably come up with techno doo-wop. ___ Freeserve AnyTime, only £13.99 per month with one month's FREE trial! 1)last week i asked about everyone's favorite label art, this week it's time for your favorite sleeve. now most of the house/techno records i buy nowadays, come in a plain black or white sleeve, but there are a few nice exceptions to the rule. one of my my favorite sleeves is not [313] but [312]: lil louis and the world - journey with the lonely lp which i just won on ebay [ $10 !!!] 2)so what have been your most lucky finds? an extremely expensive record, that you found cheap, or a record you had been looking for that you found somewhere, you'd never expected it to find, or a tune you had been looking for for ages, that you didn't even know the title of, that you happened to stumble upon. to me this is probably the most fun part of searching for records [well not always...] digging the 2nd hand/used records bins everywhere you see them. you'll be surprised at what gemms you can find at unusual places. 3)just like a lot of other [313]list members i went to amsterdam last friday to hear brett dancer and larry heard play some records at paradisco3000. and had a great time! brett was already playing when i got in at around 1.30, and he played a quality set, with almost only classics, from ymo, to model 500, 'washing machine','altered states' and many more. larry came after him around 3.00, and [to me] never really got going, maybe it was because brett dancer played quite a hard set, so going deep after that, and keeping the dancefloor filled at the same time was difficult. by 4.00 a lot of people had allready left, and that's not really helping the dj either. but he still played some great tracks, he even played 'energy flash', not a record i had expected to hear that night. so all in all, i had a great night, great music nice people, and great looking women [yes, that ís important too.] and paradiso has got a lot more to offer the next couple of months: leroy burgess, domu, sun ra dedication night with jimi tenor kirk de giorgio, and i think i saw a poster announcing kerri chandler? jurren _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

To begin with, I am not sure how it ended up on that site, but it's kinda cool. I did the interview a few months ago for an RB magazine and it fitted the context since he had just performed at the DEMF. He is actually working on a new album of 'techno doo-wop'. Just last week I finally remembered to send the quote to a good friend of mine in Detroit and he circulated it maybe. I then saw it on a Skruff newsletter I got. George had never toured Australia before. I am not even sure if he has talked to Australian media before. I knew people here, especially younger people, would be interested in his thoughts on techno generally (as well as hip-hop) and so that was on my list of questions - that quote was a useful device to draw a link. George came across as very mellow, and was far from annoyed, he doesn't seem to get annoyed by too much. I don't believe in asking veteran artists purely about their past (he says he doesn't recall much about his anyway) as it then assumes people are musuem pieces and have nothing else to offer. If anything, that can annoy artists. From Derrick's standpoint, I think in interviews he has always been someone who carefully thinks about what he says because he knows it's for prosperity. It's more being misquoted that gets to him. The quote is part of techno's mythology, so if it dies, techno dies. Does that quote really annoy anyone? I would be interested to know. I think there's more annoying things - like being marginalised by the likes of Sasha and Digweed, or people assuming that if you're techno you will play a certain kind of techno, or being musically stereotyped, or whatever. I'm sure that quote probably ended up annoying George C. as much as it probably annoyed everybody in the 313 for its all-too-frequent repetition. Unfortunately, with all that has been said about techno, it was this comment that always made the final print. and usually without the with only a sequncer to keep them company proviso. sheesh, the comment's more than ten years old. let it die. let it die. -marc

speaking of writers doing research: the lastest copy of REMIX mag has an article on the very last page about Juan Atkins. In it they claim that he and Rick Davis used a Roland R8 on the Cybotron - Enter album back in 1981. Maybe I'm no longer clear on my gear timelines, but it seems to me that if the Roland 808 (with analog drum sounds) was in production in (roughly) 1982 and the 909 (with a mixture of analog and sampled drum sounds) in 1983, wouldnt the R8, which contains sampled drum sounds only, have followed those machines years later (especially since it samples sounds from the 808 and 909 machines)? wow! Re: (313) George Clinton Answers
Yeah it seems they do have it a bit screwed up (I thought something was odd about that article too) - according to the Vintage Synth website http://www.vintagesynth.org/roland/r8.shtml the R8 was first available in '89 This is really poor for a magazine dedicated to the equipment of electronic (and more focused - dance) music. Maybe a basic phone call/email to him could have clarified that. Anyway, you'd think they'd know this sh:t or have someone on staff doing some fact checking. Sean - do you what drum machine was used? Re: (313) George Clinton Answers
Certainly doesn't annoy me. Makes me imagine music I want to produce... even if its not an all encompassing definition of techno (not that such a thing meaningfully exists). ScottV.

Like I said, I used it as a literary device to link some ideas together and I had never seen it employed in that context (and context is everything) before - ie a story on George Clinton that stresses his influence on and ongoing involvement in contemporary dance musics. I spent two hours finding the quote, destroying my office in the process. I think I found it in Dan Sicko's book in the end. Pop culture and journalism rely on 'hooks' as songs do (and even underground records have hooks). A lot of Derrick's insights are quotatable, he is very clever with words. I can think of similiarly memorable things Jeff Mills has said, Mike Banks has said, Juan and Kevin have said, etc. You could say some of Shakespeare's quotes are played out too. Above all I think the response was fun. George is a fun guy, even the serious questions he had humourous things to say.

Brett Dancer his set was a bit rougher compared to Larry his set. I can't choose which one was better, i really loved both their sets. I like the eclectic choice of records from Brett, he even played some old Armando records, Octave One and YMO and mixing it with the usual house tracks. I loved it when he played Can You Feel It just before Larry started playing. Nice to see the whole room went wild when he dropped that tune. Larry ohis set was great as well, i did not like his first records but his set kept building and he dropped the deepest tracks and energy flash in the middle of those kinda tracks was a real surprise. but it sounded nice. Her electric personality, her endless sense of humor, and her giant thirst for life will be dearly missed. - GMM - Original Message - From: glyph1001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, October 01, 2002 2:00 PM Subject: Re: (313) Laura Gavoor...
