Best thing about Montreal is the subway and bus system can get you pretty much all over. If you're staying in the old city, make sure you check out the Atwater market for great fresh food. (I'm geographicaly impaired, so Atwater and the old city might be in different areas, but I can definitely vouch for the Atwater market, whichever district it might be in!) Casa Del Polpo is owned by a couple of the guys in Godspeed You! Black Emperor and has great music and tasty, inexpensive, healthy food, plus has super decor. It's like a cafe type of atmosphere, but has good electronic and hip hop acts. Very intimate. Former Halifax-er Six Too is now living and performing there; he's got a great new album coming out on Vertical Form soon. SAT is an artspace that has good electronic and hip hop shows. Blue Dog is a club that occasionally has guest DJs in playing techno. Laika is worth checking, good food and music, owned and frequented by the SAT/MUTEK people. Your best bet is to pick up the free weeklies when you arrive (Mirror, Hour, Voir, Ici) and the free electronic music magazine (Nightlife) and see who's playing where you're there. There are a lot of great cd/vinyl shops, but I've got a horrible memory and, though I can see their interiors in my mind as I type this, I can't, for the life of me, remember their damn names. Ask around at one of the above mentioned places and they'll steer you to some good shopping. There's also an awesome theatre in Montreal (again, can't remember the name, but can see it in my brain) that has tons of movies running early morning to late night in a variety of languages, mostly independent stuff, with very cheap prices. Tobias Van Veen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) lives in Montreal and he can give you some tips, I'm sure. Hope you have a great trip. Take care. Re: (313) tone arm wiggling fixed
Yeah thanks to Sakke for finally sorting my decks out! It was indeed a simple matter of anti-skate & weight just being at the right settings - and one of the feet being loose on one deck. I tested it with cueing & spin-backs & the needle just stayed in that groove :O) cheers! G.
Re: (313) tone arm wiggling fixed
With no anti-skate, the cartridge will get natrually pulled towards the center of the record due to the forces involved in a spinning object. Put a blank sided record on, turn off the anti-skate and place the arm down on it (get ready to catch it quickly) - you'll see that it'll fly towards the center of the record. The anti-skate applies a force in the opposite direction so that the forces on either side of the record groove are equal. Put the correct amount of anti-skate on the arm and then place it back onto the spinning blank record - you'll see that the arm no longer flies towards the center. Actually, it probably flies outwards slightly, but remember the forces on the stylus are different in the groove than on a blank sided record. Best way to set anti-skate is to set it to match you playing weight, and then play some music, listening out for any distortion on either left or right channels - especially on peaks. Adjust anti-skate until you remove this distortion. > > As I understand it, the anti-skating dial is in place in order to compensate > for any overt pull towards the inside or outside, but I've never really > figured that out, except as a reaction to a problem, and to be honest I > don't really understand how a dial works in that context, since a varying > elipse always goes both inside and out by the same degree - or it should > anyway. >

Tbh I do appreciate the argument that it's not about mixing technique but just having a good time. The thing is that I find my expectations are greater these days & when I go to hear someone I want them to style it out every time. We're just coming from different angles though Rob I think - I've never heard Claude Young but I think I'd love the show-boating .. then again my fav 3 DJs right now are probably Mills, Clarke & Bone. There a pattern emerging !! Long live the small nights / parties as well!! & respect to Retrovert / Sims for putting the free nights on.

Re: (313) tone arm wiggling fixed
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the tonearm should only 'wiggle' depending on the 'centricity' of the plug - i.e., if the plug is off-center, the tonearm will waver accordingly. Otherwise, the tonearm should always relate equally to the center of the record, right? There should really be no variance other than per-record, not per turntable. Or I could be totally wrong about this, but that's how I've always dealt with it. As I understand it, the anti-skating dial is in place in order to compensate for any overt pull towards the inside or outside, but I've never really figured that out, except as a reaction to a problem, and to be honest I don't really understand how a dial works in that context, since a varying elipse always goes both inside and out by the same degree - or it should anyway. (313) one more cd tip.
My own sneezing woke me up about an hour ago. Couldn't get back to sleep so I got up to find some soothing tuneage (no, don't want to start another "sleep techno" thread here! : ) ). Deepchord cd (dc15). http://www.deepchord.com/dc15.html I think it came out early last year. No tracklisting (anyone?), only says "von schommer" (I'm not sure if this is a compilation or an album?) on the sleeve, and "limited edition" so I don't know if it's still available. Sublime deep/minimal/dubby experimental Techno, definitely up there with Basic Channel stuff. Buy on sight! G'nite, Anya
(313) Labels which May/Mills will go for
Would like to find out some smaller labels which Derrick May or Jeff Mills will go for... I'm from Perth (Australia) and record shopping for quality techno is very hard here, smaller record labels do not get distributed to us. This leaves me one option... that is to do my record shopping online... So can anyone recommend any labels (no major labels pls) that Derrick May and Jeff Mills are likely to play? (313) one for the spotters.
I've uploaded some .mp3 clips which I'm trying to ID, thus hopefully allowing me to start searching for records that I've been wanting for up to 12 years. This is some of the earliest techno I heard, and at the time I wasn't a collector so edited the tapes to remove the DJ's voices (the bits when they gave the details...doh!!! For years since I've been wanting to know what they are but have only now got the technology to do this. The links are on this page: http://www.theonlyremedy.co.uk/z_arcart/id.htm Thanks in advance for any help. Max --- http://www.ARCart.org ---
Re: (313) tone arm wiggling fixed
little tech question. I think I may have tightened it to much to begin with? will the record skip if that is to tight? I tightened it ine whole turn at first, but it skipped bad so I backed it off to about 1/3 of a turn. yeah i messed up my tonearm and had to do the same thing.. basically mine got pushed to the right so that it broke past it's little guard. it messed up the internal balances and made it super heavy so yeah - i used a screwdriver to bring it back to it's original weight, more or less, but you do have to be very very careful.. otherwise it will be either too heavy, and will get into a rut and/or put excess wear on the record, or if it's too light, welll... that's the problem you had in the first place ... jittery tonearm better to have it a bit too heavy though, i reckon ez < Recoil live on InterFACE - Astral Physics --> every Tuesday 7-9 pm est, Toronto - http://www.pirate-radio.co.uk < msn: [EMAIL PROTECTED] < icq: 98984143 :) _ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963
