Technically, even someone who just carries in their DAT and hits play and stands there staring out at the crowd is 'performing'. I'm not going to take sides in the it's all about the music debate, but don't say that someone who stands motionless and stares unblinkingly at a laptop for an hour is any less of a performer than the most visible and energetic of trick djs. They're certainly not as -good- of a performer, but they are covered equally by the definition of the word. I think that this would be a non-issue if people who do, for example, laptop PAs, projected their video output on a screen behind them so you can see what they're doing. It's a lot more difficult giving the crowd something to look at if you're not doing something on a flat horizontal surface. Most performers who don't play records forget this all too often. Now for my personal opinion: Do you have 10kW of sound in your basement? How about a few hundred people? Yeah, I didn't think so. Give me 'Play' on the DAT out in a condusive environment any day over armchair listening. -j -- Rev. really i dont go out to hear music too often because for me it is all about music. i dont need to be entertained, i can entertain myself. i go out to hear music that is being manipulated by someone in particular, i dont care how they manipulate it. hey same here, and i'm with lester too. i'm not trying to make some mission statement about how i refuse to be entertained by a laptop performance. i just dont like to see things getting homogenized. what LIVE means to me. live doesnt mean moving around a whole bunch. it means live sound manipulation be it a laptop, a keyboard, or deejaying. true, as i specifically said, i wasnt trying to argue a laptop performance isnt live. i just think it's a bleak future for electronic music performance. lemme make a stupid art analogy. there is artwork that is direct, it is what it is -- colors, form, pretty picture, boom ok there it is. then there is more conceptual art where you have to understand the process that went into making the piece, the idea behind it, to really appreciate what is going on with it. i dont want techno performance to become so slanted towards the conceptual that the more direct performance is a rarity -- which i think it is already becoming...i live in a place where this sh;t is finally starting to catch on a little bit, but these conceptual things don't draw new fans because they dont understand...going back to what tristan was saying about audiences, it would be just fine if they did, if the right audience was here, but it's not. and this is true all over the place. i understand the conceptual side, and i'm sure most people on this list do...but what about those who aren't all techno geeky etc like us? this is what i meant by elitist. i can (and often times do) just like to sit there and feel the music and the vibe in the room with my eyes closed. yeah so do i. i still maintain there can and maybe should be more than just an aural aspect to live electronic music performance. i dont think this is any sort of crazy idea. yes i appreciate music by itself. i was hoping that was a given...i dont have a bias against how an ableton mix may sound, but how it is performed, yes...i can still enjoy it, i am just concerned with the trend, more and more laptops, final scratch, ableton, n...i'm not trying to draw a line in the sand, my feelings arent all one way or another, just talking y'know.. jt _ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] | Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2003 11:57 AM | | i'm not trying to draw a line in the sand, my feelings | arent all one way or another, just talking y'know.. Exactly - I'm coming from the same position myself. While I'm prepared to come out and advocate these newer technologies, on the other hand I hold the notion of performance in pretty high esteem. The bad thing with newer tools when it comes to performance, IMHO, is that a lot of the things that are being done by the performer are happening on a screen that only the performer can see. When DJs like Jeff Mills, Claude Young, Short Kut or Dummy are performing, though, the nature of the technology they're using is that the audience can see everything they're doing. Every touch of the record, every move on the faders, it's all there before our eyes. Because I come from a background of traditional DJing, if I were to ever play a live set using Ableton, I would think hard before doing it about what I could possibly do to make it look even minutely as interesting as a decks'n'mixer DJ set... because it's true that someone bent over a laptop and clicking a mouse isn't much of a spectacle. On the other hand, I was at Basic Channel's PA at Lost back in the mid-1990s, where they performed the whole set while hidden behind a white sheet, and I don't think I've enjoyed any live PA more than I did that one. In terms of performance aesthetics, the person who most does it for me right now is Matt Herbert (his set as Radioboy at Ether last year was really fun to watch - he managed to give the impression that the music was controlling *him*, rather than the other way around...) j if u have broadband internet i can hook u up It's in morally questionable situations like these that one must ask himself: W.W.D.J.A.D? http://www.bprince.com/WWDJAD.jpg (yes, I've been waiting for an excuse to use it) - will draw for records - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno
