(313) Electric sheep on the radio
i'm up right now for the next 2 hours on http://www.powerfm.org thanks for tuning in here's last weeks playlist: taho - butterfly (sub static) Hmm... i don't know anything about these guys at all. Really nice, chilled, housey and melodic michael mayer - privat (kompakt) A shuffle time deep melodic track from Mayer on his incredibly busy label from cologne unai - stormy spring, mild summer (force tracks) Sleazy electro tinged track on the (reportedly) fiscally challenged force inc cybotron - clear (fantasy) Inspirational grooves from the man like juan radioactive man - airlock (RGC) Highlight on the the recent radioactive man album booby trap. Overall the album is a bit patchy, and doesn't have very good coherence, but this track is a gem (albeit getting a bit overplayed now) mesak haivenet - Haiven (klakson) One half of Mr. Velcro Fastener with some sublime electronic meanderings Decal - Gadgets {from brighest star} (RGC) The closing track on Alan o boyle's excellent album on RGC last year. Watch out for his new album coming out soon on Satamile Sterac electronics - Next Destination dub (music man) Rachmad played here in dublin last thursday night. I popped in after work. LAst time he was over he played an outstanding set of 80'2 electro. This time around it was hard, minimal funky techno. His mixing was wee bit ropey and he didn't seem fully into it. But nevertheless some good tunes played and the crowd reaction was excellent Electronic home entertainment - the drift (danza electronica) W jorg Henze and frank lorber with some lite german techno on this patchy label Marco Passarani - hall (pigna) Italy's answer to kenny larkin playing here on April 1st in the metrolitan with some eejit supporting him. Simon digby - fiesta del sol (UK Gold remix) (Primevil) The rest of teh Ep is bog standard tribal techno, but Chris MacCormack turns in a latino house rework on the flipside... a distinct whiff of edam Andreas Saag - Jazz lesson (Session) Multiple bongo loops just begging to be quantized... Kelis - Milkshake (Arista) I don't care what anyone says, I think this is a deadly tune. Neptunes muscling in again with a seriously sleazy bassline, kelis' vocals are never overwhelming and teh video is a treat as well ;P Talk Talk -its my life (from its my life) (EMI) This is the original track that No doubt covered last year. I actually thought the no doubt version was pretty good. I picked up this album in London last weekend The Martian - Tobacco Ties (red planet) Seriously funky string laden epic Tori Amos - professional widow (Armand van helden remix) (atlantic) Also got this in london last weekend. Never a fan of it when it came out originally (i love tori amos but the original track is pretty poor, although she does a version of this live on a video with Maynard James Keenan from Tool guesting on vocals... I was going to bring down some tool tonight, but I forgot my Cd wallet... oh well) Shawn Ward - Shadows (Jori Hulkonnen remix) (street smart) Hmmm... i've just realised i've had the wrong track in mind the whole time, and I thought the a side was on the b side and vice versa... silly me.. I even did a review of this, this is the *actual* jori hulkonnen remix Decoy - Skin deep (D1) Alan o Boyle donning his techno mantle... one of my favourite tracks of last year. Fuse vs Lfo - Loop (plus8) lfo lfo lfo lfo lfo lfo lfo lfo there you go Ricardo Villalobos - Waiworinao (playhouse) I'm actually not a fan of villalobos at all. most of his stuff just goes over my head completely, I'm going to break with the mold and say that I thought alcohofa was a pile of poo. But I really really dig this track. Its the B side on alcohofa tools.. completely diffeent to anything else i've heard him do.. Tons of tones - Activa (Urban sounds of amsterdam) I found this in a second hand shop. Vintage Rachmad... yes I do have a steve rachmad fixation Deetron - Miss Suave (Intec) I'm not a fan of tribal techno.. anyone can just stick some bongo loops over a 909... most of Deetron's stuff is like that and really doesn't do anything for me at all... likewise with Intec, the MTV of Techno. But I do quite like this track Digital Justice - Alternative Reality Part 1 : shapes (Fragile) AS the sleevenotes say all shenanigans performed at check yer head studios manchester uk bless Fix - Flash (Electro funk) Reissue of Voorn's signature George Clinton sampling track Laurent Garnier - Sambou (Fcomm) One of the better tunes of last year, but I really didn't pick up on it until about a month ago. Garnier is one of my very favourite producers, and an exellent dj to boot.. a rare thing Steve *ahem* Rachmad - Sinosphere (Sino) This got robbed (along with my entire record and cd collection + decks + mixer) almost 2 years ago. We weren't reunited until about 6 months ago, when I bought it again. This one goes under my pillow at night.
(313) DanceStar
I just saw the results of the DanceStar awards and had a good laugh - especially when I read Paris Hilton won a prize!!! Tell me, are these hopelessly out of touch or are The Crystal Method still 'big' in the US? Our awards are laughable too, so I figure it's one of those quirks that happens with awards everywhere. ;)))
(313) Electric sheep on the radio
Love the Britney review : )I've never really got Villalobos' stuff either. I listen to everything of his I see on the shelf, trying to understand what everyone else can see.maybe I'm missing that gene.Date: Sun, 14 Mar 2004 17:18:20 -0800To: 313@hyperreal.orgFrom: "Chymera" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Electric sheep on the radioMessage-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]i'm up right now for the next 2 hourson http://www.powerfm.orgthanks for tuning inhere's last weeks playlist:taho - butterfly (sub static)Hmm... i don't know anything about these guys at all. RE: (313) Techno's Video (was voice)
Some tips: Studio !K7 have quite a series of DVDs, the Lux series, the X-Mix... not everything has aged well, though. Daft Punk made quite an impressive anime movie to go along their latest album ; I don't know about other countries, but in France there have been a series of DVDs each about a specific guy, Jonze, Gondry and Cunningham for now... Gwendal -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesd ay, March 10, 2004 5:35 PM To: Andrew Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313 Techno's Video (was voice) A cool thing about techno is that it never went down that path, although a truly visual representation of techno is probably waiting to happen - I always pictured the coolest scenes from Drexciya making it into videos, kind of a window into that world, an underwater dance party... and I guess it's people like Jeff who are leading the charge with his DVD. As I mentioned once before on this list - there used to be a website that had videos of techno artists but is no longer in operation. It's too bad because they had Carl Craig's Televised Green Smoke video - which was very cool. I'd love to see some collection on DVD of Detroit techno/house videos past and present. With all the underground video makers and people like Michel Gondry and such into cutting edge/underground music you'd think someone would be approaching some techno heads to make videos. I don't mean some shaky hand-held DV shot in a dark club but actual music videos with concepts and higher production. Anyone remember the Inner City videos? If not check them out on KMS's website. I know - nowadays it takes major label money to make most videos but I don't think this is entirely true anymore with the technology and talent available MEK

(313) small polite request
OK so much for my first experiment (see below) - my post didn't post! This is me trying again. Only since I composed the below (on Friday) I've had another thought - I too receive some people's posts as unintelligible (to me) code, Greg I missed your explanation (maybe before I joined the list?) for this which you referred to when replying to someone (?Ken?) on this subject. If the people who's posts get mangled like this (Ian Cheshire, Robert Taylor et al) aren't able to change the way they send to stop it happening is there something I can do at my end to receive them intact? (I'm not a PC whizz). It seems some of you do as I think people reply to them - plus it would be a feat of remarkable (if admirable) perversity to keep on sending incomprehensible posts that no one understood!. First attempt at message (sent Friday 12/3/04): Hello people Experimental first post after joining list a little while ago. Since subscribing I've teetered on the verge of unsubscribing simply because of the volume of stuff I'm receiving - I've started by trying the digest but I'm getting several per day, however I want to continue because there is loads of interest to me on here. Lo and behold a debate ensues about signal to noise which covers everything I was thinking. That debate was full and valid points were put on all sides, personally I'm more into finding out about records, gigs etc, not so much into chat and jokes but some are (and they've been here longer than me!) so that's cool - lets carry on happily self moderating. There's just one thing; Greg has asked on a couple of occasions now for people to try and be a bit careful about including large numbers of previous posts in their replies and to try to remove works/ ISP signatures and disclaimers where possible before sending - can I second this? I realise that sometimes (in the case of signatures) this isn't possible or that people might want to put specific bits of previous posts that they're replying to in for reference but outside of that if this stuff was missed off it would hugely reduce the size of posts and make finding what people are actually trying to say easier - I think someone in the S/N debate said press delete when not interested but at present it takes some time to find whether you are or not. Hope this makes sense and I haven't overlooked something obvious. And (in chat mode!) hello to various people I've met on my techno wanderings and I see contributing to this list - Tom Magic Feet (some years ago) Brendan from London (recently) and those I'll be joining on the trip to Liverpool to see Kenny Larkin tonight! Ok well if I send my mails from home like now then everyone will see what I post, I know this as peeps have emailed me saying thank god you have sorted it but if I send if from work on a web based format then these people cannot see it :( Basically I need to address the situation as I know about 10% of the list can't see what I post from work, so I am at a dilema 1. Do I wait and probably forget what I was gonna say or even not have time to post later on or 2. Carry on with how I post as my ISP's web mail will not change it ( I have aksed)... Your votes would help me decide but I would hate to be a victim of what I can or cannot post as then I will become a silent 313'er which would not be in my nature :) (as you prob are all aware) Cheers :0) Ian -Original Message- From: Ken Odeluga [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 15 March 2004 11:20 To: Robert Taylor; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Subject: RE: (313) small polite request As Greg Earle said Rob, it's not a HTML issue. I say carry on Ian! It ain't your fault this happens, and furthermore, you've tried to seek a solution, to no avail. You can't stop making your well-liked contributions to 313 for this reason, albeit a tricky situation. That's my humble opinion anyway. Re: (313) two new (but older) purchases
not really on topic, but if you ever get a chance to see sun electric live, DO IT. (dunno if they are even around anymore as sun electric...) I saw them with the orb in pontiac oh, around 96, and it ROCKED. The orb was good (if you dig hippy techno) but SE totally showed them up. I think wagon christ was there too, or maybe that was the aphex show. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, March 12, 2004 4:15 PM Subject: (313) two new (but older) purchases Sean Deason's Allegory Metaphor Sun Electric Via Nostra these will be the soundtrack for my weekend - brilliant glittery techno lovely lovely MEK

(313) Dani Siciliano and Ulysses Tuesday, 3/16/04
Hey everybody! Your favorite DJ and snakecharmer, Ulysses, has been tapped to open up and close out tomorrow night at Coral Room for Ms. Dani Siciliano. Come down and check it out! The show starts at 8PM, so don't be late! !K7 Records UPDATE - Dani Siciliano US Tour The voice of Dani Siciliano will be familiar to many of you, as her distinctive jazz colored tones have been heard on the remarkable albums of Matthew Herbert. Dani's approach to songwriting and recording is beautifully original, however the tracks onLikes... are still based on the wordplay and hooks of great pop music. Dani has an extraordinary musical worldview, informed in equal parts by jazz and soul, punk and country, go-go and hip-hop and of course house and electronica. In pop music, singing is pretty much all the singer does. Luckily, I can build the musical context for my own voice. For me it's important that the production sounds just as good as the vocals. And that lets me be a bit more expressive, which ultimately is what any artist should be doing. -Dani Siciliano, taken from cover story in this month's XLR8R Dani Siciliano and her full live band will appear in the US on the following dates: Tuesday, 3/16/04 Venue: Coral Room, 512 west 29th ST.
