RE: (313) apologies, a correction (was Oliver Ho LP)

2004-05-20 Thread dan
Just listened again to the Oliver Ho LP and realised that it's track
three that samples Steve Reich, not track 4, and I think the sample
is actually from the track 'Drumming', not Electric Counterpoint.

Apologies for not being accurate first time round. Double apologies
to those not interested in my trainspotterish pedantry! ;-)

While we're on the subject of Reich though, 'Drumming' is probably
even more 'techno' than 'Electric Counterpoint'. It's an astonishing
piece made from 12 people playing live rhythm loops on an assortment
of tuned drums, marimba, glockenspiels, voice and piccolo. The way it
works is that the different performers start and stop playing their
loops, which are also vary in lenghth.

The effect is that seemingly random shifting patterns emerge as the
varying length loops overlay each other in different ways. All the
while the rhythm inexorably builds up. Essentially it sounds totally
like minimal techno and lasts for about 85 minutes! If you ever get
the chance to listen to it right through it's utterly mesmerising. It
was released on Deutsche Grammophon as a box set and isn't too hard
to pick up.

I have the new album too, are you speaking about track 4??

hello

Just received the new Oliver Ho album in the post, it's called 'The
Soft Machine' and is coming out on Meta. Listening to it right now in
fact and have to say that I'm rather enjoying it. There's a track
that samples Steve Reich (always the way to win favour with me) +
lots of 313 style synthy business.

Hadn't actually consciously heard any of his stuff before. Had lumped
him together with the looped bangers people but there seems to be
more to it than that.

Anyone have any further Oliver Ho recommendations?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE--THE PURE SONIK SESSIONS CONTINUE ON JUNE 3RD WITH BEN
SIMS + DJ T-1000: ALL NIGHT LONG

CHICAGO -- After the success of THE PURE SONIK SESSIONS 01 with OLIVER HO, MIKE
DEARBORN (LIVE), and Detroit-born, Chicago-based organizer/resident DJ T-1000
(aka ALAN OLDHAM), we go from strength to strength with the second episode; THE
PURE SONIK SESSIONS 02: BEN SIMS and DJ T-1000, Thursday, June 3rd, at Smartbar
Chicago.

It's been over five years since London's Mr. Sims has visited Chicago, and we
at Pure Sonik Records are proud to sponsor his return. His tribal, Latin-tinged
productions on his Theory, Ingoma, and Hardgroove record labels have made
dancefloors move worldwide, as have his remixes for such well-known names as
Jeff Mills, Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer, and Mark Broom, among others.

As a promoter, his London-based "Split" night has taken the capital by storm,
showcasing the talents of such international stars as Surgeon, Dave Clarke,
Oliver Ho, Paul Mac, A Guy Called Gerald, Derrick May, and DJ T-1000 himself.
In fact, it was Oldham's gig at "Split" last year that was one of the
inspirations for THE PURE SONIK SESSIONS!

As a DJ, Mr. Sims combines tight, compressed tribalism with old-school hip-hop
influences; scratches and quick cuts, a three-deck assault that takes no
prisoners, as evidenced on his import-only "Escapism" and "Theory of
Interpretation" mix CDs.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned DJ T-1000 is no slouch. This time, though, he's
flipping the script and showing off his old-school roots in a more wide-ranging
opening set which will encompass some Wax Trax-era industrial favorites as
heard on his career-defining "Fast Forward" Public Radio program back in the
day. To hear what "Fast Forward" sounded like firsthand, check out

well ken i'll give you my opinion if you like.

the Congoman 12 doesn't really sound like it has any C2 involvement but
is just a really nice track to have if you like dub/old reggae. the
sleeve/packaging is nice too.

the Beanfield 12 is really good...kind of on the same vibe as the Busted
Trees 12 (which i think is better from a 313 depth point of view, and
easier to get hold of). the mix is a long epic with a female vocal but
doesn't fall into the trap of being too smooth and sophisticated. this
and the busted trees thing are essential c2 12s if you ask me
(especailly if you like carl's recent output...ie angola rmx etc)

Went to the opening of this last night.

Being brief, it's good, well worth a look!

Some nice artwork on the first floor, pretty sparse, but what's there is
enjoyable.

Some great photograph's - 2 different sets, One set of some decaying
buildings (particuarly the 'railroad' station), and another set of colour
portraits of people of Detroit. Some nice cartoon artwork by Kenji, and
some cool magazines by Mike Rubin?

Also they have loads of Ipod's and Apple Macs set up and you can listen to
14 CD's worth of Detroit music.
Loads of good stuff...

Elliot's documentary has it's own booth thing on the ground floor. I went
along to see this, but ended up a bit gutted as you couldn't hear any of
the commentary because there was music on in the main hall. It looks
excellent though and I'm going to go back and watch it.

I stood there with Rebecca and watched it silently for a bit. In the
segment I saw, it was flipping between interviews with Mike Pickering,
Derrick May, Alan Oldham, Graham Massey (and a bunch of nice transmat
artwork)

So I reckon that will be well worth a look.

anyway, yeah, recommended, go see it.

I'm okay- seems i was wrong, i always thought that sweat electric had x2 on
it, DOH... I think i got the idea from a compilation that listed it as that
ages ago, it should have been electric soul instead. Thank god for discogs
to clear up the haze and fog that is detroit releases.

Sorry about the misinformation. I'll shut up now.

You know the S.I.D shop in Detroit?

I presume some people on here shop there.
Well, does anyone know if it's open during the Movement Festival?

A mate is off to the festival, and I was planning on giving him a few quid
to try and get me some of those S.I.D 12's.
(I don't own any of them)
Thing is, I guess he'll want to buy them as well. Does anyone know if
they're one per customer?

Also, can anyone recommend the essential ones?

I think I'd like to get the Drexciya one, I heard that a few years back.
But I can't afford them all, so is there one or two that are essential?

Many Thanks

Alex
