(313) Berlin

2004-08-15 Thread Christopher Davey
I'm going to be in Berlin from August 20 to 30. So it's the usual request
for any nights I should make it to, and good record stores I should visit
(Hardwax obviously, but I don't know any others). Replies will be much
appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

(313) Techno Films

2004-08-15 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I have been thinking about 'techno' films - ie films that the techno
community have adopted as part of their subculture - as lately I've been
catching up on DVDs when I am too tired to do anything else constructive. ;)

I guess hip-hop types have Star Wars but techno people I find are into
Metropolis, Bladerunner and The Matrix - classic sci fi.

Personally I didn't quite get into The Matrix. It's very strong visually -
and very clever - but I found it very cold and devoid of any humanity and
the third instalment was infuriating with its inconsistencies and poor
script. However, it is fun observing spots in the first as though they took
out obvious Sydney features, it's clearly Sydney and I know that Dymocks
store spot well. ;)

I much preferred Dark City, also shot in Sydney, with the underrated Rufus
Sewell - who was so amazing as Stuart era super mack Charles II recently.
Funny it came out before The Matrix...

Some others might be (or these are some of my faves):
Gattica (slept-on, what more can I say)
Artificial Intelligence (very simple yet profound, loved the multiple
endings)
Minority Report (interesting, I almost warmed to Tom Cruise in this role)

Anyway I am wondering if any of you esteemed people would like to suggest
your favourite techno film/s.

Tetsuo has to be one of the ultimate techno movies for me, if such a thing
exists. Also most movies by David Cronenberg. I guess its just the
reacurring theme of the man's fusion with the synthetic. I also think of
things like Altered States, but I think thats probably more as drug thing
than having any references to techno music.

What I want to see is a feature length animee drawn by Alan Oldham with a
score by Derrick May.

(313) Japan

2004-08-15 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I am going to a junket to Tokyo for 5 days and don't know much at all other
than it's super cool.
Does anyone have any practical travel tips?
These are the things worrying me:
1. Is it hard moving around, ie from airport into city, by train? Is there
any English signage?
2. Is it hard to get vegetarian food in Japan, as I have heard so? I don't
eat any fish or fish byproducts at all... Dairy is OK.
3. Do they have coffee freely available (Starbucks, anything)? Pathetic as
it is, I need coffee more than food or I become semi-conscious and it can
trigger my migraines (not a joke!).
Please e-mail me in private

for some reason, when I think techno films futuristic/SciFi films rarely
pop into my head. does that make me an abomination?

I think of movies like Snatch, Kill Bill, Unbreakable, Seven, Fight Club,
The Fifth Element (okay so one SciFi film maybe), Frailty, John Woo or
Kirosawa (sp?) films, and of course the ultimate techno film: Trainspotting,
and the original Twilight Zone TV series but rarely does techno = the
future for me. maybe I dont exactly know what techno is. theres my problem!
:^) to me techno is more of a mood than a concept. techno is like a texture
or context.

sean I just dont *get* Star Wars at all deason

I too enjoyed Gattica and AI and didn't enjoy the Matrix.
After seeing the second one, I couldn't even bother to see
the third. along with bladerunner, i like the other films based on
philip k dick's

writings including impostor (slept on and definitely worth a look;
very emotive because there is a love story involved), screamers (not
that good, but

interesting enough), total recall (woulda been better without arnie
because he tends to get the focus when the story itself should),
and paycheck (ditto for ben affleck; it's about the story, not him!).

Re[2]: (313) Techno Films

2004-08-15 Thread Brian 'balistic' Prince
Sometimes the boldest move an artist can make is to cater to an
imaginative adolescent whim or two. It's what separates good classic
techno from the forgettable self-important sonic wallpaper of IDM.

So until I make my own techno movie, give me Nude on the Moon,
Attack of the Giant Leeches, Battle Angel, Stalker, Godzilla
2000, and Robocop.

That should make the embarrassed-by-sci-fi crowd cringe a little.

Stewart: would not have pegged you as a Tetsuo fan.

Stewart: would not have pegged you as a Tetsuo fan.

Man, Tetsuo is cool. I love the imagery and the soundtrack. Im a huge fan of
Aisian Cinema, just watched Visitor Q by Tesheki Mikke(sp?) , now that's
some screwed up sh!t!! I think also something like Eraserhead is pretty
techno in the way it uses sound as much as the imagery to really create an
atmosphere.
