RE: (313) the face may 1988?

2010-06-14 Thread Odeluga, Ken

Somewhere along the line you chaps have become hopelessly confused, I'm afraid
to say.

1. That is NOT Alison Moyet on the cover.

Alison Moyet was in the UK group Yazoo [with Vince Clarke], AKA Yaz in the US
for copyright considerations.

2. The woman on the cover is a woman who was a UK pop-house act called 'Yaz',
late '80s, early '90s.

3. Eric is NOT Vince Clarke. Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode after their first
big hits and commenced a series of projects, including the one with Alison
Moyet, afterwards.

4. The 'Eric' referred to on Yazoo's first LP called 'Upstairs at Eric' is not
a real person of course.

But it is a hint about a real person who was associated with Yazoo early on:
one Mr. Eric C. Radcliffe. [E.C. Radcliffe on the liner notes of the LP].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Radcliffe

He was a sort of arranger/ manager/ engineer / producer / all-round figure who
knows a lot but prefers to skulk around in the background, from what I
understand.

Now I hope you all were listening, because tomorrow, there will be a test.

Ken

Wasn't the guy in the group (Eric?) one of the original Depeche Mode guys? In
my opinion he took a lot with him after he left DM (after the first album I
believe). That first album was groovier than "post Eric" material.

Re: (313) the face may 1988?

2010-06-14 Thread darnistle

Hold on.

Alison Moyet was the vocalist for Yaz ("Situation", "State Farm",
"Nobody's Diary", "Don't Go", etc), as they were called here in the US.

The woman on the cover of that issue of The Face is not Alison Moyet.
According to discogs, her name is Yasmin Evans:

It's the singer named "Yasmin Evans" of a group called "Yazz". She's
British.
They had quite a hit with "the only way is up".

Cheers,

RE: (313) the face may 1988?

2010-06-14 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Yaz, who sang "The Only Way Is Up." [That one still makes me cringe!]

To be fair, I think KMS did the odd nice remix of a few of her songs

I'm a little puzzled about some of the technical details also:

What size is the hole in the middle? Presumably it has to be large enough
to accommodate the 15mm-ish spindle CD players use? Do you get some special
adaptor for the smaller spindle on a vinyl turntable?

& I make a CD to be only just larger than the "label" area on a conventional
modern record. So either it only has a few seconds playing time or (more
likely) it has a playable groove extending further toward the centre of the
disc? But not all tone arms will move this far, some only expect to get as
far as the run out groove of conventional vinyl and their range doesn't
extend beyond that.

Or am I being really stupid & not visualising this thing correctly?
