RE: (313) NPR on Chicago Footwork music

2010-12-08 Thread AntonBanks.com
I listened to some of the music but found myself waiting for something to
happen. It sounds like Miami bass crossed with the break from an old rave
anthem. I can't say I was able to give it a proper listen though.

As for the dance... Without fail, every time I see Jumpstyle and Hardstyle
all I can think of is country line dancing. [said only half sarcastically]

My thoughts as well Jeff. I can't say i'm feeling the music at all... I
tried, oh lord did I try ;) But yes, the dance itself is crazy to watch!

There's so much going on that it takes a bit to get your head around
many of  the footworks tracks, but when you watch vids of these guys

There's been new interest in the Chicago 'footwork' phenomenon, which
is the new school form of Jit/Juke competetive dance.  The music is
pretty crazy stuff, growing out of booty house and ghetto tech but
seemingly endless rhythmic variation.  They've set up the new Planet
Mu footwork compilation for streaming if you want to check it out...

I've been fascinated by all the competetive street dance cultures
since people started breaking in the late 70s.  It's something that
springs up in different forms independently -- Caipohera in Brazil,
Breakdancing in NYC, Jit in Detroit, Juke in Chicago, even the
competetive Stepping that's so important to African-American
 sororities and fraternities.

Even more fascinating, I can't think of any analogous dance culture
 amongst white people.

In the UK you have to go back to Morris, Clog and Northern Soul - but I
wouldn't say they where/are exclusive.
