(313) Just As Impulsive, Not So Short Wild Kingdom
Tonight's set-in-the-making started out in ambient mode, impelled by a recent old 12" acquisition from Schematic far more ambient than is usually the case for that label. The set cruised on in ambient mode for a while until lurching into electro and acid (I'm never far from either), tapering off into some off-kilter minimal house. Bit players include Suzuki K1, Orbital, Luke Slater, Isolee, Ian Clark, Io, Thieving Dreamer, Elfish Echo, and others. Playing in the background as I write this is Julius Hemphill's underground jazz classic "Dogon A.D", in preparation for a 2-part radio special on St. Louis' Black Artists Group, a spawning ground for may famous jazz musicians (Hemphill being one of them). I'm also planning a special called "Steel City Techno", a then/now examination of electronic labels and artists.in Sheffield, UK. This will start in the late 80s/early 90s with labels like Ozone, Fonn, Intone, Plastex, and the fledgling Warp Records, with a second part examining contemporary developments. Feel free to email me with suggestions and possible contacts, especially regarding early days. I'm also preparing for a day-long special feature called "Day of the Dead" featuring music from folks who passed untimely. I have plenty of material from rock, blues, and jazz, but the techno/electronic entries are still a bit sparse Email me if you have suggestions. About to drive home to Detroit from Miami... heading through Orlando, Atlanta, Knoxville, Nashville, & Cincinnati... Anyone have any additional suggestions of record shops, recording studios, or venues that I should stop at along the way? Looking for house, techno, and spots that have a connection to Detroit...
