RE: (313) Carls Davis AKA Carl Craig
Hmmm 'Sound Sketches'...is one way of putting it. In fact, what these productions appear to be [unless I'm mistaken] are individual pieces made with perhaps a maximum of 16 channels. Additionally, judging by the tonal character of sounds used, I'd suggest that these were produced using real hardware - and I'd even go so far as to say I can recognise some proper analogue tones here too. When you're using hardware with a small studio, what you make often ends up sounding like 'sketches'. But they're not strictly that. Each of these pieces has just the kind of intrigue, warmth and apparent simplicity which I tend to like, from what I can tell so far. Thumbs up. [And this is from someone who's been quite disappointed by CC's recent output - albeit that's mostly been in the form of remixes.] Ken -Original Message- From: Aidan O'Doherty [mailto:aidan.b.odohe...@gmail.com] Sent: 22 May 2012 11:08 To: Odeluga, Ken Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Carls Davis AKA Carl Craig since i can't listen to samples in work, can i ask people's opinions - is it any cop? Hi Ken and all I had a listen too and came to very similar conclusions. Great to hear something more like machine funk, analogue, stripped down and without the bells and whistles. Ill be getting a copy for sure. Re: (313) Carls Davis AKA Carl Craig
I hope Mr. Craig has banked some of the money he's made doing those remixes, and is willing to find his muse again. A lot of people have been underwhelmed by his recent stuff and many of the Planet E release of late. Up until a couple years ago, Planet E was a 'buy on sight' label. If I actually kept my records sorted there would be a big Planet E section. It was bolstered when the local record shop got out of dance vinyl and put everything on clearance, and I think I grabbed 10 Planet E records. What Planet E has been doing of late seems to reflect a desire to sell records in the larger market of commercial dance music. I understand wanting to make a living, but it can tarnish a label's reputation to move away from what made it a success in the first place. The character of these sketches reminds me of many of the ones in the recent spate of tracks 'from the vaults' which a lot of folk have made a big fuss of. Perhaps if CC had claimed they were 'rediscovered' or something, and maybe got Clone to pick them up ;-) --Original Message-- From: Patrick Wacher To: Andrew Green Cc: Ken Odeluga Cc: Aidan O'Doherty Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Carls Davis AKA Carl Craig Sent: 22 May 2012 18:46 I'm digging it! -- Patrick Wacher Sent with Sparrow (http://www.sparrowmailapp.com/?sig) On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 4:31 AM, Andrew Green wrote: Hi Ken and all I had a listen too and came to very similar conclusions. What I'm waiting for is for Gene Hunt to break off some more tracks from his reel to reel archive. He's got tapes for days.
