Re: (313)Final scratch
Ms. Pinky is excellent - though not meant for the traditional DJ. It's very, very, very difficult to beatmatch with because of the noted latency. Not to say that it can't be done, I've heard people who could use it with an adequate amount of proficiency. Though I should add, I heard from a somewhat reliable source that Dan Bell has been using it, though I have no idea if that's true or not - but who knows? It is great for the most avent-of-turntablists. The ability to create patches in Jitter or Max/MSP and then control it using a turntable opens up tons of possibility. I want to add the FS guys are great. Back in the BeOS heyday of the late-90's they were extremely open with the development and sending out early-kits. In fact, Hawtin and Aquaviva came in very late in the game - I would say during the BeOS fallout around '99 when the FS guys were already working with Linux. While I think FS has hit a wall in terms of development, and I don't see the software going anywhere without a complete redesign, the progress they made early-on should not be contested. amg On Apr 3, 2004, at 7:20 AM, robin wrote: this ms.pinky looks interesting. latency looks a little high tho (12ms vs. 7 for FS afaik). robin... - -Original Message- - From: - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - org] On Behalf Of josh23 - Sent: 03 April 2004 02:56 - To: 313@hyperreal.org - Subject: RE: (313)Final scratch - - - and, i was just trying to make a joke, but what i think - makes ms.pinky stand - apart from final scratch is the open source nature of the - program like James - mentioned, there are already some pretty cool plugins for - mspinky such as Girl: - - http://girl.yowstar.com/ - - josh23 - - - On Fri, 2 Apr 2004 18:48:53 -0700, josh23 wrote - the records have these high pitched tones on them. you run the - turntables out into phono preamps and into an audio interface. and - then run the audio interface into the mixer and into your laptop. - the laptop interprets the signal and makes the mp3 do what you're - doing with the record sends it back through the audio - interface and - out through the mixer. it's good stuff. - - josh23 - - On Fri, 2 Apr 2004 20:45:50 -0500 (EST), yussel wrote - without the hardware, how does the analog turntable - signal become digital? - - and honestly- FS was made by some creative freaks from - Amsterdam who - spent years working with underground DJs to develope the - system. Be smart and do what the Detroit nerds do, spend memorial weekend in Detroit and thanhead to Montreal for Mutek. Those two combined typically can't be beat. Detroit is probably the best for record shopping, and parties, and hanging with the local 313'ers. NYC would be my close second. San Francisco is a great music town, but good techno in clubs is thin on the ground. New York City is the one place you can go and stay for a week and be sure that there will be 4 or 5 musical events you'd wait years to see anywhere else. Detroit, for seeing DJs, you need to plan your trip around events you know will be happening. Of course you could plan your roadtrip around Memorial Day and be totally sorted. Re: (313) (OT) Plastic crates
milk crates can be found at any hardware store :) afternoon once again, does anyone know of any stores in the UK that stock plastic crates which are suitable for storing records? i'm looking for crates which are record-sized, if you know what i mean. the sort of thing that Spybox (www.spybox.co.uk) make would be perfect, except they're rather expensive given that i may need a couple of dozen. i'm sure this has been brought-up before - iirc Mr Tom had some suggestions - so apologies for re-hashing old OT ground. ta Rob -- Allen Goodman [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.fksche.com

Re: (313) new order.
Massive influence in European circles, the Manchester scene was probably just as important as the UK shoegaze scene as far as influence on electronic music. As far as techno, or more specifically Detroit techno, its hard to say but I wouldnt doubt it. As far as recommendations go, I would pick up Substance and Brotherhood from New Order and Heart Soul from Joy Division Hi, this question was probably asked a couple of times allready on this list... well... then once more. Can someone please tell me how important new order was for the development of techno? What do the detroit guys think of new order? how did it influence what they were doing? Can I find some information on the net covering the link between new order and detroit techno? And what new order albums should I buy as an introduction to the band? Re: (313) new order.
Why would that be a better question? Thats like if I said a better question would be, how much influence the Kraut rock bands had on Kraftwerk, or how much influence the minimalist composers had on Kraut rock. We could go in circles a better question would be: how much of an influence was Kraftwerk on New Order? sean - Original Message - From: garrett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Maarten Baute [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 3:21 PM Subject: Re: (313) new order. Agreed, that track and the Dntel(Superpitcher remix) were also the best two tracks on Triple R's Kompakt mix Freinds IMO BTW, what is Kompakt Pop? Re: (313) Eddie 'Friendster' Fowlkes
Eddie left me this wonderful testimonial: Allen is the guy. When Carol and I were down and out after last year, he was always there with a hug, a fresh plate of warm cookies, and a word of encouragement. I agree though, Friendster is a horrible addiction stay away. If you've got a Friendster account, this is pretty damn hilarious: http://www.Friendster.COM/user.jsp?id=363509 I particularly liked Clonemaster K's testimonial :) And if you don't have a Friendster account ... well, you're missing out on the company of such list luminaries as Todd Sines, Titonton, Diana Potts, Fixer, Mr. Plaslaiko and Yours Truly. I would also recommend the Jim O'Rourke set from ATP 2003, it's probably one of the best sets I have heard in memory. I have no idea if its on Slsk, but I assume it will be shortly ... Re: (313) mills and hawtin
Does anyone have it recorded? Not sure if anyone has heard about it, but Hawtin and crew will be playing at Tastefest (July 3 I believe) and I'm assuming that there will be an afterparty. He played some of what I'm assuming is the new Plastikman tracks later in the night at the Necto and it sounded real good. - Original Message - From: James Grindle [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, May 29, 2003 1:19 PM Subject: (313) mills and hawtin I saw Mills in Record time during the 01 festival. Here comes my flame bait. For all the forward thinking stuff mills preaches he should be spinning some music people don't know. As far as Hawtin is concerned, well I missed the Necto party but have seen those antics in New York alot over the past year and a half. As long as Rich is ok with that no one else should care. Everyone bitched during the de9 era that he was a boring robot at least he is bringing his personality to the decks and having fun with it. I for one am completely excited about the new record. Everything I heard was straight up mind-fuk. I love the lyrics and vocals don't look to me for the answers, I'm just a voice inside your head, help yourself! Excellant. Most of it does sound Plastikman though so I'm sure people will complain about that too. It seemed to encompass everyform of his material all into one album with more emphasis on the minimal Consumed era long tracks with huge bass lines. just my 2 cents I hope to make Memorial day weekend in Detroit 5 years in a row!
