Re: (313) martin

2003-08-31 Thread Kookie
They were both put out by Motown Records orginally.

The first one was the precursor to to the I Have a Dream and recorded in
Detroit at Cobo I believe. The speech was preceded by the great march of
freedom down Woodward. This is the verision featured on TP's Blackwater
remix. The record is called The Great March to Freedom.

The second is the more famous speech at Washington DC, which I'm sure most
of you have heard by now. This one is called The Great March on
Washington

I hope this helps. I could go into further detail on the history of the
recordings, if you would like.

Re: (313) Detroit development site

2003-08-28 Thread Kookie
Detroit's future is not dependant on the Downtown area. Rather the local
neighborhoods are what the city needs to survive. It is difficult to build
a buisness on Lunch traffic. The stadiums were a waste of money. Small
microloans could have gone alot further to improving the city or even
clearing vacant lots and burned out cars from the streets. I don't like the
way the city is heading, but at least there is a vision inmind.

wow, there's a lot to look over and read there. hope all that planning and
 construction results in positive outcomes.

one thing I've always been fascinated by is architectural concept drawings
and their lack of inclusion of transient/homeless people - everyone is
always going somewhere and usually dressed quite cleanly. I know it's all
for business but once I'd like to see one that represented how that same
picture would pan out in real life - people loitering in groups by the bus
stops, someone sitting in the corner of a building asking for money,
someone sleeping on a bench, a cop giving a parking ticket, etc.
Life is always so pleasant in those drawings.

Re: (313) Plastikman - Closer

2003-08-05 Thread Kookie
After hearing lots and lots of hype about this albulm for the past couple of
months, I had very high expectations. I don't think it lives up to what
I've heard but it still is amazing albulm. The first track really sucks me
in especially with the synthy opening. I think Ping Pong and Headcase are
very good also. When listening to the albulm I think its important to keep
in mind that it is a concept albulm, bringing you closer into the mind of
Mr Hawtin. I think the vocals are a very important part of the albulm which
relates directly to the concept behind it all. I'm constantly amazed on how
dark the albulm feels. I will agree with Dennis and say that it is a must
buy when it comes out in October.

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet
seen
 anything about it.

After giving Closer a few listens, I have to say that I'm very impressed
at not only the musical quality but the way in which Plastikman was able
to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new album
that
isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The
whole
album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each
song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a
listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production
methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its
potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that
 don't quite work.
The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not
over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description.
The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space
and
feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence akin
to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik).
This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without
dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding
some
new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely
new.
 Buy on site.

No dance club in Michigan can stay open til 6. Its flat out illegal. There
are some known places that the cops typically don't bust (gay clubs and goth

til 4, if all of the liquor even the stuff on the floor is gone by 2:30 and
theres no dancing.

the way the michigan law is written it is not legal to dance after the

Late on the thread.. email problems... anyhue,

How many parties that get busted, now-a-days, get busted
due to venues serving after 2am? How many due to improper permits or
somesuch? Do parties get busted for illegal venues anymore, or is the
days of break-in-and-rave over? What other reasons do the police have
  to harass a party?

Seems to me that if a large percentage of parties are
getting busted due to serving alcohol after 2am, an obvious solution
is to choose to have our parties in more responsible venues.

  _derek

ps. Oddly, I've never been at a party that has been busted.
Therefore, logically, another obvious solution is to only attend
  parties that I go to.

How many parties that get busted, now-a-days, get busted
due to venues serving after 2am? How many due to improper
permits or somesuch? Do parties get busted for illegal
venues anymore, or is the days of break-in-and-rave over?
What other reasons do the police have to harass a party?

Seems to me that if a large percentage of parties are
getting busted due to serving alcohol after 2am, an obvious
solution is to choose to have our parties in more
 responsible venues.

 _derek

ps. Oddly, I've never been at a party that has been busted.
Therefore, logically, another obvious solution is to only
attend parties that I go to.

2003-05-29 Thread Kookie
Not sure if anyone has heard about it, but Hawtin and crew will be playing
at Tastefest (July 3 I believe) and I'm assuming that there will be an
afterparty. He played some of what I'm assuming is the new Plastikman
tracks later in the night at the Necto and it sounded real good.

I saw Mills in Record time during the 01 festival.
Here comes my flame bait. For all the forward thinking stuff mills
preaches he should be spinning some music people don't know.
As far as Hawtin is concerned, well I missed the Necto party but have seen
those antics in New York alot over the past year and a half. As long as Rich
is ok with that no one else should care. Everyone bitched during the de9 era
that he was a boring robot at least he is bringing his personality to the
decks and having fun with it. I for one am completely excited about the new
record. Everything I heard was straight up mind-fuk. I love the lyrics and
vocals don't look to me for the answers, I'm just a voice inside your head,
help yourself!
Excellant. Most of it does sound Plastikman though so I'm sure people will
complain about that too. It seemed to encompass everyform of his material
all into one album with more emphasis on the minimal Consumed era long
tracks with huge bass lines.
   just my 2 cents
I hope to make Memorial day weekend in Detroit 5 years in a row!

Re: (313) busted ?????

2003-05-28 Thread Kookie
The cops also shut down numerous private loft parties that weekend.

My theories:
They don't think the festival is going to happen next year.
The number of afterparties has gotten out of hand.
They want to kill all the events being planned over the summer.

 but it
ended at 2am the ticket had question marks on it for the end time and the

 i had fun.

magdas set was really good and i think i enjoyed it the most tonight. se
played
a couple of good acid house track like jesus loves the acid and a
jackmaster
track think it's called debasser? it's on the bang the box ep. and here
usual
 minimal techno. excellent mixing

rich came out kinda banging it dance floor style and it was cool for a bit
but i
had to get some fresh air so I headed to the patio and listen to clark for
a
 while. very nice tarck selection.
i went back in and rich was playing some minimal german stuff, to quote
carlos
the polka beat, they were some sick tracks.
at one point he kinda stopped it for a minute and played this track with a
dance
hall bass line and the half time high hat, very cool track almost sounded
plastikman? but not as much as the track he played twords the end it
reminded me
of hypokondriak. it had a simular bass line and effect on the bass line.
rich was breaking it down a lot with the effects.
is he using the mac version of final scratch?
there was a fleet of powerbooks up there.
 2 14 tibook and a 12 tibook
someone said he uses one for his effects now?

what was the deal with the lights?
are those minus glasses going to be for sale?

I remember the first time I saw Disco D he was still
 in highschool.

I just got his latest CD, Disco D, a Night at the
Booty Bar in the mail. This is some serious ghetto
booty and some mad *ass skilz...yo.

I come from the days of listening to WJLB cruizin'
down Jefferson and blushing to the raunchy lyrics and
bouncing to the beats. Take the lyrics of 7 years ago
and turn them 7 degrees up on the raunch scale and
make the beats a bit more dirty and you've got A Night
at the Booty Bar. I'll admit some are even a bit too
 raunchy for me.:)

Some of the tracks are actually orginal tracks of
Dave's (including the ever so catchy You Need Another
Drink). This CD IS driving down Jefferson. It's the new
style mixed with the old. Suddenly I'm 18 again, in
the passenger seat of my friend's hatch- back on the
way to St.Andrews poluting my lungs and liver.

I really don't think one can appreciate Dave's
talents on the tables until they see him spin
live. He's incredibly quick, reads the crowd and has a
talent for mixing the old with the new just at the
right momentand ya gotta love his tendancy to
stick his tongue out while he's playing. This kid has
carryied the ghetto tech torch to NYC, and I can't
help but be thankful that a bit of detroit is closer
to me. I can't help to give mad props to someone so
young whose doing what he wants, doing it well and
making the loot too. The fly honeys he's pictured with
 on the cover help too.

Now excuse me, I'm gonna go make me some rum n'
cokes, dim the lights and have myself a night at the
 booty bar.

He will be returning to Ann Arbor (Outside of Detroit) to the Necto on Sun
April 27th for a cd release party

On 4/11/2003, Tom Robbins/Magic Feet [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
ARTIST: DISCO D
TITLE: A NIGHT AT THE BOOTY BAR
LABEL: TOMMY BOY
FORMAT: CD
RELEASE DATE: 9 JUNE 2003
CAT. NO: TB-1565-2

Disco D is dirty like Uncle Luke. His music is fast and nasty like the
neighborhood slut you went to school with and if Mr. Mathers is Detroit's
worst kept secret, Disco D is the best. Hailing from the Motor City which
pioneered such diverse genres of music ranging from rock-n-roll, to soul,
to
techno; Disco D has become the poster boy for the underground phenomenon
known as Ghettotech.

He has been called everything from surreally filthy, to the holder of
the
Ghettotech torch, to devastatingly wicked, by the press, yet his mother
prefers to just call him David Shayman. At only 22 years of age, Disco D
has already been featured and profiled in magazines such as Details, Urb,
Mixer, CMJ, and Wired. Alternative Press included him in the Top 100
Artists of 2001 and he has graced the cover of XLR8R. As an alumnus of
University of Michigan's business school, Disco D founded and heads two
companies: Ghetto Tech Institute Recordings (GTI Recordings) as well as
Booty Bar (along with DJ Profit and DJ Salinger), the world's first
Ghettotech lifestyle brand. He has released music on !K7, Mixconnection
Media, Intuit-Solar, as well as his own two labels, and has done remix work
for galactic space pimps 8 Ball and MJG, former Cash Money Millionaire
B.G.,
as well as The Lords of Acid. His underground mixtapes are coveted by the
tragically hip and his records are included in the sets of influential
international DJ's like Laurent Garnier, Bad Boy Bill, Andrew Weatherall
and
Dave Clarke.

If Drum-n-Bass had been created in America, Ghettotech certainly would have
been the end result. Like Drum-n-Bass, Ghettotech is the hybridization of
two cultures and genres of music. Whereas Drum-n-Bass has heavy techno and
ragga influences, Ghettotech borrows from old school electro and raunchy
Miami Bass to create its own distinct sound and scene. Ghettotech is
ultimately more fun and it is uniquely American in its sleazy decadence
with
its amphetamine-paced beats and adult themes. Indeed, Ghettotech will
never
get played at a high school dance with its profane samples and raps
dedicated to topics ranging from cunnilingus, to smoking blunts, to getting
drunk... in other words, the finer things in life. Ghettotech is meant to
actually make people dance, it is strictly populist; and it accomplishes
that largely with DJ battle tricks, frenetic beats, and its uniquely filthy
sound.

Although quite a few parallels can certainly be drawn between Drum-n-Bass
and Ghettotech, specifically the use of break beats and the convergence of
the black urban music scene and the largely white dance music culture, they
produce inherently different sounds. Think 2 Live Crew meets electronic
dance music meets a bottle of Old English and you have Ghettotech.
Ghettotech has recently left Detroit's underground cabaret parties and
strip
clubs to be embraced by more traditional dance music aficionados. For
those
that are in the know in the dance scene, Ghettotech is where it's at,
bitch.

Disco D's own brand of Ghettotech could be described as being more musical
than some of his contemporaries. Certainly, the tracks are a little richer
-
more polished, and often more overtly funky than some of the standard booty
fare. As a DJ, he is the perfect compromise between the party styles of DJ
Assault, and the straight up turntablist deck-work of DJ Godfather. Disco D
manages to combine nifty programming with immaculate scratching, cutting,
and track-drops - you'll be in awe of his skills, yet he never interupts
the
smooth flow of the mix.

Disco D's latest mixed effort A Night at the Booty Bar, marks an exciting
time at Tommy Boy with its equally strong representation of the two sounds
and cultures they capture best: dance and hip hop. A Night at the Booty
Bar
is a stunning mix and a good primer for those new to Ghettotech and a good
refresher for those already crotch-deep within the raunchy scene. A Night
at the Booty Bar includes many of Disco D's original productions and
collaborations with artists like former Cash Money Millionaire B.G., Kid
Rock protégé Paradime, European darling Princess Superstar, Detroit's first
lady of rap Lola Damone and underground up-and-comer Helluva. Naturally,
Disco D's stellar remixes are included as well as many classic Ghettotech
anthems. In true mixtape fashion, Helluva, Lola, and Harlem's Solace
blesses the disc with freestyles. A Night at the Booty Bar hits the racks
on June 8th. Hear it at your favourite strip club and warehouse parties.

 Absolute utter class!
One of the best House sets I've heard since I last saw TP
and Traxx in Germany and Jonny at Slices last year.
Before Osunlade got on the decks Simon Haggis laid
down some sweet tunes in the main room, and then it was
5 hours of dancing bliss for me (he played 6 but we left
earlier) and a very appreciative audience.
And I need a foot massage now...
Props to Whistlebump for getting Osunlade to play here.
You _have_ to go see him if he plays anywhere near you.

Agreed. Two other bits of the Brixton Techno Mafia and two technotourists
say ouch. Serious podiatric damage incurred. Consensus fantastic
performance. Next to last song was Chaka Khan's I Know You, I Live You
followed by something that sounds like Osunlade 3 years from now. Mr.
Odeluga was g e t t i n g d o w n to some Fela Kuti in the last hour as
well. He played a ton of his own tracks and I spotted a few older Strictly
records. I'm sure Otto and KJ can give a more thorough report on the track
selection. At any rate, it was really nice seeing The End crowd (and venue)
transformed for a house vibe. There was a lot of space to move almost all
night, and that is a precious commodity at The End. Per topicality: he
played Amp Dog Knights, a Moodymann cut that isn't on KDJ (can't recall
which off the top of my head), and Theo Parrish's I Can Take It.

Submerge had 3 Drexciya releases available on colored vinyl, but you had
to
visit them in person to get a copy (sorta like the SID records), or order
from www.clone.nl (I'm sure they sold out by now). They were pressed up
shortly after the passing of James Stinson. There were 3 released on
marbled
vinyl: Bubble Metropolis, Deap Sea Dweller, and Molecular Enhancement. I
was
told there were only 50 copies of each being released on colored. And as
far
as I now they are sold out. In regards to their value, I sold 2 copies for
$165 to someone in Europe. Most people I talked with weren't even aware
 these existed.

Re: (313) DEMF hotels / Oscar Mulero as a DJ

2003-01-24 Thread Kookie
I'm from Detroit so I haven't gotten a hotel. But I've heard bad things
about the Ren Cen as its filled with frat boys. Right across the street
is a Marriot Courtyard, which might be cheaper and is right across the
street from Hart Plaza. If you are going to have access to a car, I would
recommend staying in Warren. There are some nice hotels there for cheap on
the weekends espcially. Its a 15 minute drive downtown and if you park in
the underground structure parking is only like 2 bucks a day. Plus pretty
much everyone is going to be going to some afterparties, so your going to
have to drive anyways. And I doubt that Hawtin will be using the City Club
this year, so don't stay in the Ramada for that reason.

Last year I stayed with my friends (Electro duo VolSoc) in a pimpin' room

nicer room. Downsides: Very noisy, and somehow the staff discovered our
little (*cough*) 4:20 setup, and threatened to throw us out. Cooler heads
prevailed, and we remained. I don't think I'd go back there this year,
 though, after that.

I've seen Oscar Mulero do a tag-team 2x4 set with my friend Angel Molina
(where are you, Juanjo?) at Sonar. Very Mills-ian set. I dug it.
 They killed it.

What are mint condition copies of Plus 8's From Our Minds to Yours Volumes
1
and 2 worth? Description: Both contain 2 X 12 records (a total of 4), the
catalog numbers are PLUS8009 and PLUS8022, and neither are in the
shrinkwrap. I'm not sure if these were ever re-pressed, but I believe the
copies I have are first edition.

Also, any tips on where best to sell these? Anywhere besides ebay?

 Thanks for the help,

Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World
 January 2003 - June 2004
 Detroit Historical Museum's Stark Hall

History is often thought of as a series of events that occurred a very
long
time ago. The truth is, history is also what happened yesterday, five
minutes ago, and in fact, today's events will be tomorrow's history. With
this in mind the Detroit Historical Museum has partnered with the
originators of Techno to share the story of their music. This
groundbreaking
exhibit will trace Techno's early beginning from its Detroit roots to its
 emergence as a global sensation.
An ambitious new exhibit - the world's first on the subject -- that
celebrates a style of music born in Detroit that has kept the world
dancing
 for more than 20 years.

Learn the straight story of how Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May
and
Kevin Saunderson, four young men from metro Detroit, created and developed
this electronic style of dance music and trace its early beginnings from
local Detroit clubs to its emergence as a global sensation.

I think you may be referring to Dandy Jack. Luciano played first- sort of
a Perlon-on-Coke sound if you ask me. It was alright, but every time it
started getting good, he'd find some way to screw it up.

Akufen played second, which was a letdown for me. He was pretty much
playing entire tracks from his records live on his laptop without much
manipulation, and overall it lacked any serious energy.

I left during Akufen's set but Carlos Souffront said that Dandy Jack came
on after and ripped sh!t up for the lucky people who stuck around- some
serious jackin stuff for the dance floor..too bad i missed it.
