Re: (313) MIDI controllers for dummies
is that the tempo adjust knob is too coarse to lock down two tracks. you could also set the lsb and msb of the control to say lsb=120 msb=130 (depending on what you are spinning) which would give you more control. - Original Message - From: kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Monday, March 12, 2007 4:14 pm Subject: Re: (313) MIDI controllers for dummies To: list 313 313@hyperreal.org I have an X-Session controller and it is actually really nice. You have all the traditional DJ mixer knobs and sliders, plus a few extra per channel to map to whatever you like in Traktor. The only thing about it I can complain about -- and it's more a MIDI limitation than a limitation of the X-Session -- is that the tempo adjust knob is too coarse to lock down two tracks. I solved this by mapping an extra knob for each channel to the fine-adjust tempo knob, So you get two tracks together with the coarse knob, then use the fine knob for fine control. I have a friend who does some bar djing who just bought it and he is quite happy. He says it feels solid enough for the price. If you need more buttons look no farther than your computer keyboard.
Re: (313) Oslo Detroit Closes
touch is open again in cleveland. they have been having quite a few shows there but they seem to have been poorly promoted. some in the past few months were ryan elliot, geoff white, greg gow. ive only been there twice, but it was definitely one of the perfect dance music spots ive been to alongside the former Touch in cleveland. great club, i hope someone more reliable opens something up in that spot. i love basement dancefloors and the walls and atmosphere there were excellent. tom

Thank you, I'll be here all week. Seriously though, this is a loss. I was only there once, this year during DEMF and was struck by how perfect a venue for dance music it was. Smallish, very basic decor, dark, fantastic sound. It was the sort of place that had everything that might distract from the music removed. It was similar to SubTonic in New York City, except that it wasn't dirty and beat up. I hope someone in Detroit sees the quality of the place as a venue, and re-opens it. The current owners of Oslo did a lot of work to build a near-perfect place for dance music -- a new owner could get a liquor license, open the doors, and have something great on their hands. Re: (313) re: production
i completely agree on the 16 track comment. i'll add it to my previously mentioned thoughts about vsts which have already drastically affected the way i work... with software. i disagree about music being better off had software not existed. it is too absolute. a mix of hardware along with a computer and certain software is what i personally prefer. why not have lush sound and convenience all in one. but its also the general design of the software. do people REALLY need more than 16 tracks to make a dance song? 16 tracks would get LAUGHED at by today's standards. people want infinite tracks so they can make infinite small changes to their infinite bit depth sample of someone in a little room banging on a drum set. music would be better had this nonsense just never existed. tom
Re: RE: (313) really
To qualify that though, dedicated RAM in digital synth vs. RAM used by myriad other competing applications (meaning potentially less availablefor sound quality) a friend of mine has some neat winxp tricks to get around this. he has a really tweaked out machine where he has disabled all but the absolutely necessary services to run the machine and to use the necessary audio and other hardware of course. then there is more to be done once the machine is started up. he starts 1 explorer to launch everything from. then he kills every last process that is not needed. the box doesn't have a desktop, start menu or anything. just all black with one explorer window. it runs beautifully. if any of you are interested i can send the guide that he followed to the list this evening from home. - Original Message - From: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Friday, September 1, 2006 8:46 am Subject: RE: (313) really To: 313@hyperreal.org To qualify that though, dedicated RAM in digital synth vs. RAM used by myriad other competing applications (meaning potentially less availablefor sound quality) plus more than likely better DACs in digital synths than in a computer and even an external soundcard.

Re: (313) Production
music is probably the most universal language there is for the human species. the best music does the same thing, reguardless of who made it or where it comes from. i used to think that music was a universal language. then i had some cheesy LER class where the professor did some clever thing by asking the class if music is a universal language. everyone said yes. then she played some song from some far off place and asked us to write to the emotion that was being conveyed. everyone wrote down something pretty similar. saying it sounded happy or what not. after this the professor told us what it was about... mourning over death or something like that despite the fact that the class thought it was a happy sounding song. so yeah cheesy story but whatever... it fits. where i am going is that music comes out of different cultures across the word. emotion, or better yet methods of expressing emotion are not the same from culture to culture. therefore when expressing emotion through music is it is going to be expressed in each culture's specific manner causing these emotions to not be delivered or interpreted in the same way. so very culturally specific music is definitely not a universal language. maybe music that is a fusion of culturally specific forms of music (techno) can be a universal language. it represents many cultures combined so many more people will interpret it the same. i guess i could have made this post more simple by saying it's just not so black and white to say all music is universal language. techno may be but the traditional music of native *insert country* people is most likely not universally understood.
(313) re: production
seems like some of you are blaming the bad computer generated music on producers having ridiculous amounts of vst effects and instruments which causes them to over use them and not even take the time to learn them and use them to their fullest capabilities. as opposed to a studio where one would spend a lot of money on one thing and learn every last little detail about it, produce the greatest sounds it could etc. first off i agree with that completely. but it's not like the people who have every vst effect and instrument in existence are buying them. so the problem with the bad computer generated music is software piracy not the computer itself. software is expensive just like hardware (maybe not completely comparable price ranges). if people bought every piece of software they use i am assuming they would devote a lot more time to mastering it and would have less distractions from other toys causing better computer music to be produced.

i searched through the archive and i couldn't find this being posted already, flame away if it has... from the paxahau website: -- Greetings Detroit Electronic Music fans and supporters, As most of you may already be aware, Paxahau has been in discussions to produce this year’s electronic music festival in Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend. Everyone is very aware of the time constraints that once again envelop the production of this event. It is our sincere desire and mission to provide Detroit, its supporters and cultural enthusiasts with a festival that represents ALL aspects and genres of electronic music from around the globe and here at home. Because of this we are extending an open ear from all of us this evening at Oslo between 11 pm and 1 am to provide anyone who comes with an opportunity to present opinions and input regarding format and to discuss any involvement they may be able to offer. Our goal is to provide the electronic music community and all who visit Detroit with a festival that is as diverse as the music culture that brings us all together in clubs all over the world, every weekend. We realize this is short notice but we have a very limited amount of time before our final presentation to the City and sponsors and we want to be able to represent the contributing members of Detroit’s electronic music community. Please understand that for this specific weekend Paxahau is not in the business of promoting or producing ONE type of music - this festival belongs to ALL of electronic music and its supporters. Because of this we are enthusiastically encouraging all of YOU to come and speak with us tonight to discuss the representation you would like to see, or can bring to the table. Please be prepared to give us a “who you are / what you can represent / how we can reach you” breakdown. Help us make this festival what it was always meant to be. Sincere Regards, Paxahau

i was in a similar boat around 98. unfortunately i have seen so many artists who i love today between the years of 97-99 when i knew to little (or was not sober enough) to fully appreciate it. fortunately i have seen a lot of the artists i am talking about recently such as may, beyer, (i don't think you will like this one but...) hawtin. now if i could only get see another cari lekebusch or prototype 909 (i know if will NEVER get this chance) performance. - Original Message - From: Thomas D.
