Power may not be restored to all of Detroit Edison's 2.1 million customers
until Sunday as the area copes with the massive power outage that hit the
northeastern United States, officials said.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said efforts were underway to restore power
to residents in Detroit, Lansing and Ann Arbor. She said Detroit Edison
told her they can't say when all power will be fully restored, but that it
might take until Sunday.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport was closed for up to six hours Thursday and
several flights canceled before opening again for air traffic early Friday,
according to Liz Boyd, the governor's press secretary.

The power outage also affected water supplies because water in the state is
distributed by electric pumps, said Mary Dettloff, Granholm's deputy press
secretary.

Some areas of Saginaw and Bay City were also suffering from power outages,
she said. Meanwhile, the governor has ordered her staff to move to the
state's emergency operations center in Lansing.

All personnel was called in to duty Thursday night by Detroit's police
chief, said Dettloff. A police spokeswoman said the city of Detroit
remained calm and peaceful Friday morning.

Just south of Detroit in Melvindale, a two-alarm fire broke out shortly
after midnight at the Marathon Oil Refinery, but was under control by
Friday morning, according to the Detroit Fire Department.

The Michigan State Police has closed both northbound and southbound lanes
of Interstate 75, which runs by the refinery property, a state police
spokesman said Friday morning.

Hi everyone.

I haven't been reading this thread and the power here is still inconsistent
(on again off again). There's a mass exodus at the gas lines unlike
anything I've seen, and according to my parents nothing like they've seen
since the '67 riots.

I apologize if this ground has been covered previously in the thread, but I
hope those of you without power in Detroit (or with minimal power) are
keeping an eye out for your neighbor, especially the elderly ones. I know
it's a very boy scout thing to say, but in situations like these I think
it's most appropriate. I'm going to sound really preachy, but take two
minutes out of your boredom or away from that battery powered laptop and
check to see if they're doing okay.

Now I'm going to go back to my porch and strum a few songs on the ol'
guitar.

stay cool (literally...it's muggy and 86 degrees out there)
