Re: (313) hotel stuff / movement personal ad

2004-02-25 Thread Greg Earle

 Paging Greg Earle . . . for a second opinion . . .

On the Ath? Or in general ...

My quick 2 cents (that's 1/2 of a Euro cent, by the time you read this):

1999 - Luxor: oops, that wasn't the DEMF

2000 - Uh, wait, I was in Tokyo being an idiot

2001 - Ren Center Marriott:

Nice hotel, pricey ($189 a night at the time), getting back up to your
room at the end of the night was a nightmare. Other than that, nice
place to stay.

2002 - Athenaeum:

Really nice hotel, way pricey, had to walk a few more blocks, no biggie.
Only recommended if you can split a room there 3 ways (double room plus
sofa bed). Then it becomes somewhat affordable. Scare: Hotel staff
found

a small amount of Mary Jew Wanna (not mine), threatened to throw us out.
Cooler heads prevailed, but you might wanna consider a more laid-back
hotel :-)

2003 - Pontchartrain:

OK hotel, not too pricey, good location, way too much chaos from the
stupid patio parties, not to mention noise, don't think I'll go back.

My recommendation: do the Ath thing if you've got 2 good roommates.
Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere if you're solo, maybe to one of the
hotels not mentioned above (Courtyard, Holiday Inn, etc.)

- Greg (who can't remember the last year he spent that weekend at home)

Only thing though it's rather difficult (not impossible) to bring in a
large cache of your own alcoholic beverages to enjoy in your room. They
stopped us last year for a 12 pack.

Wow. I wasn't sure that i'd ever be doing this but i am going to be able
to go to movement this year. Can anyone give me a reccommendation of a
reasonably priced hotel that's near all the action ? i am looking for
something pretty simple - just somewhere to sleep occasionally.

Also anyone else who is going wants to meet up please drop me a line. I
like funky techno house. I can dance a little bit and am hopefully not
a complete embarrasment at parties. I don't drink much or get messy. I
like food too. I can provide references a photo.

The Marriott is the most expensive hotel I've ever come across - anywhere!
You can get five star accom in Sydney for less and it's way more plush.
I stayed in Atlanta in a five star and that was the same and wayyy wayyy
wa more plush.
But the people are really nice. If you're male and in a group you can afford
to go someplace further away and cheaper.
You also need a good sense of direction for the Marriott, they kinda change
everything yearly. It's the Detroit Labyrinth methinks. ;)

This year I'll be staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Washington and

now if you book online (http://www.holiday-inn.com). It seems to be the only
bigger hotel within walking distance that's under $100, excluding the
Ramada, but that place can be quite a disaster. The Holiday Inn also has
complimentary breakfast and an indoor pool!

I think Dennis already mentioned a couple motels in the area. All of the
major online discount sites (Travelocity, Expedia, Hotwire, etc.) seem to be
offering the three major hotels (Pontchartrain, RenCen Marriot, Courtyard
Marriot) for nothing lower that $120.

Well, our experience last year at the Pontch wasn't that good. Too many
*really* inconsiderate people - you could just tell by the look on the
hotel staff faces that they hated us all. The people in the rooms next to
us got kicked out early by hotel security in the middle of the night which
made getting some sleep in the early morning a lot easier. The hallways get
trashed with used room service food and flyers all over the place.
Since they now are hosting parties on the 2nd floor terrace the place has
become a trash dump plus the music they play sucks @ss - the elevators
which already took a long time to arrive now take even longer, they run out
of their computer cables faster than I can type this sentence, parking in
the area if you drive or rent a car is sparse - don't park in a ramp
because they will most likely close for the weekend and you won't get your
car out and you'll be paying $40-50 for what is essentially the non-secure
storage of your vehicle.
There's more than this but I just can't think of it all right now - I don't
blame the hotel but rather those people who come to visit and don't think
twice about the people who actually are working that weekend to keep us all
happy customers.

The good things about the Pontch - breakfast buffet on Sunday morning can't
be beat - just don't fall asleep in your eggs, the views if you get a room
on the river side are fantastic, the proximity to the festival is great,
and when you get to hear the hotel security kick out a bunch of idiots with
two more days left to the festival you get to fall off the bed laughing and
then finally get some sleep.

Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna stay at the Pontch again this year (unless I
can't find anything else). The rooms smelled kinda funky and it was party
central. There were many disrespectful guests who trashed the facilities. I
felt bad for the cleaning staff - actually all the staff there were really nice
to us and worked extra hard to keep up with the losers trashing the place. Oh,
and the crowd that came in for the balcony parties - frightening!!!

It *was* really, really close to Hart Plaza so it's ideal for location.

Wow. I wasn't sure that i'd ever be doing this but i am
going to be able
to go to movement this year. Can anyone give me a
reccommendation of a
reasonably priced hotel that's near all the action ? i
am looking for
something pretty simple - just somewhere to sleep
occasionally.

Also anyone else who is going wants to meet up please
drop me a line. I
like funky techno house. I can dance a little bit and
am hopefully not
a complete embarrasment at parties. I don't drink much
or get messy. I
like food too. I can provide references a photo.

The Marriott is the most expensive hotel I've ever come across - anywhere!

The Athenium is pricier, but it's also the dopest hotel in the world. You
can cram most of this list in one of those rooms - practically just in the
bathtub! ;)

we're booked in at the Shorecrest Motor Inn, $69 a night...

the place is located on E. Jefferson Ave. (http://www.shorecrestmi.com/)

Does anyone know of a place you can book the Shorecrest through a secure
form? I'll just give them a call if not, but would prefer to get an email
confirmation from them.
