i haven't read simon reynolds book yet but planning to when it's 
available in australia later this month, but as far as proto detroit 
techno goes, you can hear it in lots of places, apart from kraftwerk. 
you can also hear it in 'technodelic' by ymo and even in 'sands of time' 
by the sos band (some of this is so 'landcruising') and 'control' by 
janet jackson, both produced by jam  lewis. as we know, techno didn't 
just appear fully formed out of nowhere.

btw: the book has a section on australian post-punk bands - some very
obscure, but excellent bands are mentioned. very impressed by it's depth.
who could forget the slug f*ckers?
