Fabric remains your best bet for quality DJs. Kev
Saunderson, Aril Brikha and Technasia are playing there on 4.8

Re: [313] London techno vinyl stores / venues

2001-07-21 Thread Fred Heutte
A second to the recommendation for Vinyl Junkies, the coolest store
I found in London. The owner is a real character, a French guy named
JP who has good musical taste. He also has the greatest number
of Moods & Grooves releases I've seen in a single store :) He tends
to stock deep into specific labels (M&G and Shaboom are the two I remember
in particular) rather than broadly. And unlike many London stores
where you have to get the staff to hand you records off the wall in
order to preview them, everything at VJ is out in record bins.

I didn't like the Music & Video Exchange in Soho very much but the one
in the Camden Town market area is good.

Atlas was a very good store and was still open at New Year's when
I was there, but it closed in February or so if memory serves.

I also liked Flying Records in Soho, though it's basically 100% house
and no techno. Lots of cool "West London" releases though.

Generally I was fairly disappointed with the record stores in London,
and I went to a *lot* of them the week I was there (at least 20,
including non-dance music places like Stern's, which I've long admired
for their African releases, but they have a sterile and uninviting
retail operation across from the Kings Cross/St Pancras train station).

As for clubs, I did see DJ Assault at Fabric, which is a decent
commercial club but *huge* with a long queue even on a low-attendance
night. Top quality sound system. Crowds: what you see in DJ or
Mixmag.

Fred

I caught Ian O'Brien and James Pennington playing Fabric last Saturday, both
DJs were good (especially Ian O'Brien), but I thought the sound system was
pretty poorly set up in the room they played. It over excentuated and distorted
the bass and left too much of the tunes unheard. Other than that a wicked club,
Jazzanova are there tonight if anyone's interested.

New techno:

Smallfish (www.smallfish.co.uk), Old Street.*
Eukatech (www.eukatech.co.uk), Endell Street (nr Covent Garden).
Ambient Soho (website?), Berwick Street (Soho).
Rough Trade (www.rough-trade.com), Neal's Yard (nr Covent Garden).
Vinyl Junkies (www.vinyl-junkies.co.uk), Berwick Street (more housey).*

I think Tag have moved in with Eukatech and Atlas have closed :(

Second hand techno:

Reckless (www.reckless.co.uk), Berwick Street & Upper Street (Islington).*
Music and Video (www.mveshops.co.uk), all over like a rash (Notting Hill,
Berwick St, Camden etc.)

Marked shops (*) are my favourites. Also check out Sister Ray for a hybrid
of the two (also on Berwick Street).

Check Timeout for specific stuff, or ask in a non moody record shop, though
the End and Fabric are your good bets for venues. I hear good things of the
Turnmills techno Fridays, too, but have never been to them.

Hope that helps,

Jonny.

Best record stores in London for Techno are :

Eukatech (Covent Garden)
Big Apple (Croydon)
Atlas (Archer St)
Swag (Croydon)

Venues for decent Techno..

hmmm well Lost is the best club, but that's infrequent. The End has a
monthly residency but Fabric remains your best bet for quality DJs. Kev
Saunderson, Aril Brikha and Technasia are playing there on 4.8

I'd say London is ok for techno. Carl Craig just DJ'ed at Turnmills. Richie
is over here regularly too.

1) Can anyone recommend some good record stores in London where one could
find some decent techno?
