RE: [313] CiM live, deFocus tour

2002-04-01 Thread Matthew MacQueen
313'er Simon Walley (CiM) came through Los Angeles last night, on a bill with
Claire (of Clear/Smallfish/deFocus fame) DJ'ing and John Tejada live.
And what a top night it was!

Great! The Chicago stop of the deFocus mini-tour last Thursday was brilliant as
well. The party was at Subterranean, an intimate joint in the Wicker Park hood
with 2 floors and some pretty cool sightlines to the stage, little candles
everywhere and photograph projections cycling thru behind the stage. Clark
Warner from MINUS/Plus 8 camp DJ'd an hour of dynamic electronics while packing
plenty of beats and rhythms, a really nice 'journey' kind of a DJ set.

Then CiM took the stage for about 45 minutes for a gripping live PA, cutting
through old and new tracks and plenty of midtempo techno/idm with his signature
'warm data' style, deep chords and melodies juxtaposed with punchy beats with
bleeps and plenty of material I hadn't heard before. Plus cool little 'bolt'
style mini interludes to stitch the tracks together in transition. A sonic
bridge between Detroit's past warmth and soul with an experimental British
twist. Cheers and applause at the close... let's have another EP then Simon!
if ya didn't sprain your wrist twisting all those knobs... ;)

Finally a DJ set by Clair closed out the night -- cross-fader tricking a wicked
and authoritative set of UK old and new (classic Network and Warp records never
sounded so good), and packed a walloping portion of both Detroit anthems and
obscure 313 classics, a bumping set for the headz brought smiles all around.

Took some photos, I'll send out a link when we get some online.

So did anyone out west catch the San Francisco show last night?

Cheers,
Matt MacQueen

Cim and Defocus

I must second the late respect-due. Picked this up about a month ago. Pretty
grrovy stuff I must say. And it's amazing how much music you can pack onto
 one slab of wax.

I know what you mean, but I would give my left leg for CiM to write
longer tracks. I totally love his music, I just wish I could love it for
longer. Please Simon, write a few 8 minute tracks for us, Pleeze!!! ;)

While we are on the topic, has anyone heard that new limited edition
John Tejeda 12 that came out a few weeks back on Defocus? Defocus is
turning into one of my favorite labels, the Lackluster and Metamatics
records are so good.

...gees this is off topic

take care,
mt

If you are on the list great job, I never seen any of your Focus 12's

I saw that Tom's name was on the back of the album.
