Thanks for sharing this Minto!

If you are interested in these kinds of mixes, DJ Assault's website is a
goldmine: http://www.djassault.com/

Go to the "mixtape vault" and start poking around. I highly recommend the
Farley WBMX mixes and the Mayday NYE mix on WJLB.

Those old radio mixes shit on modern podcast culture from great heights.

isn't part of the reason why most mix cd's sound lame is because of the fact
that a mix on cd is something completely different from a mix in a club? mr
fingers 'washing machine' sounds completely different when listening to it
at home, compared to hearing it on loud speakers in a club! this has nothing
to do with using a computer for the mixing part, or doing it live, and
everything with the intention off the mixer [as MEK stated] if my memory is
correct, didn't derrick may make mix tapes for the radio, where he would
record a set, and cut it to pieces, to end up with a one hour mix? i think
mix cd's should be approached like that a lot more [though lisencing
problems might be a bit more of a problem.] and a computer could be used to
achieve that.
on another note, i believe strongly that you should make mistakes while
mixing... i'm not talking trainwrecking all night, but mixing seemless for
an entire evening will [imho] make your set sound sterile and lets you loose
focus on the music, whereas small mistakes will get your attention, and
thereby give more attention to the music you're playing.

just to clear up any confusion:
the MayDay mix *was* done live. the *edits* were done later on a computer
(and a bit of little known trivia: the edits were done by Kenny Larkin.) For
me the edits dont in any way take away from the brillance of this mix.

2002-10-07 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I'm really after the Derrick May vibe - that certain funk and groove he has
and it will come out whether it was a real mix or a computer splice and
dice - it's his choice of tunes and exactly how he mixes them. The good
vibe will come out because it is his mind that is doing either mix types -
not the computer. The computer is just a tool for his mind to expand...
I get the computer vs live mix debate though - I find some ProTools mixes
boring but I really think it's just the person behind the mouse.

A tired argument but my feelings about it...

How would it happen, so many styles have been done
already. The only thing really new is the stuff near
hardcore but not contrived like hardcore.
Newstyle, futurestyle, groovestyle, etc.

'Almost' Everything else has been done. Not saying
it's bad, it's just been done.
