Well actually, which is the one that has what I'd call a strong John Carpenter

One of the Meanwhile Records guys played it at Detached in Leeds on Saturday
and it sounded awesome. Know I have it, can't remember
which one it is.

I want to play it out this Saturday!

Which reminds me; if anyone is in the York area I'll be spinning at BoomChik at

Guys, thanks for the suggestion. But no, it's more dancefloor than that (and I
am talking about the version with beats).

Definitely reminds me of film theme, if only I could remember which. Maybe
Carpenter, maybe not.

God, there's a lot to be said for digital DJing. I could just pull up all my
Omar S tracks flick through them. It takes longer
to get the 12s out of their sleeves but the real thing is just finding them! I
didn't think it was Psychotic Photosynthesis but
thought I'd double check. Then I couldn't find my copy of that. YouTubed it
;-)

I am currently working on a spreadsheet of my 12s so I know where they are...

Got it!!!

You sorted me in the end, as having got a YouTube page up to listen to PP it
had loads more Omar S stuff on I remembered what it
was when I saw the title (so if I'd just looked at Discogs it would have
prompted me enough).

Curtin just released an EP on Mobilee, and there's one on Metamorphic
that came out at the end of the year with Jason Byers on vox. Both worth
checking out. Featured the majority of 'em on the show and try to play
as much of a song in the mix as I can, if you'd like to hear some long

Re: (313) Omar S and Beatport stupidity was Re: (313) FXHE on Beatport

2009-02-11 Thread Andrew Duke

Just to clarify my subject line:
stupidity refers only to Beatport; I dig Omar S; just hoping he will
sell his stuff on other sites, too, not just Beatport

Andrew Duke wrote:

Jacob Arnold wrote:

As mentioned in Omar-S' RA interview, a bunch of his tracks are now on
Beatport, though some seem to be mislabeled (in particular on AOS 003)...

Beatport screwing things up?! How can that possibly be? ;)
Since their big changes a month ago, you still get that darn long number
for the file name start instead of artist name, which every bloody store
out there except Beatport seems to be able to handle; And still no
downloadable

art. I thought they were going to listen to input from customers/potential
customers; they sent me a BS email with BS reasons why they couldn't get
rid of those ridiculous #s; er, how come every other store can make
downloads

available without them; and don't tell me to use the Beatport Downloader to
avoid this; I shouldn't have to use an application to download music
from a store.

I still remember that mix Kevin Saunderson did for RA where he was listing
the song NUMBERS instead of artist names--and expressing his frustration
about this--because that's the way Beatport was listing 'em. C'mon,
Beatport,
get your ish together or all your BS about being the biggest and best
download store

for electronic music won't matter for a rat's arse.

Don't get me wrong: it is absolutely great that Omar S is making his
stuff available
for those who want to buy it digitally, but all those Omar S releases on
Beatport
are listed as exclusive, and I find that extremely unfortunate; so
if/when I buy any
digital Omar S it will be directly through his FXHE site, not through
Beatport.

hopefully in future Omar S (hope you're reading this, Omar :))
will also make his stuff available on Junodownload.com,
Boomkat, and some of the other download places that have their ish a lot
more together. Hate to hate on Beatport, but was really hoping they'd get
their ish together and they've completed failed, imo.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Andrew

I certainly thing that the interviewer made this one especially good. No beach

After the ridiculously exciting Bleep party tomorrow the fun continues here:

Shrunken Head
Saturday 10 March
Bar 54 - 54 Commercial Street, London, E1
10pm-6am
£10 before midnight/£12 after

Guest DJ: Omar-S (FXHE/Detroit) - 4 Hour Set
Resident DJs: Stuart Patterson and Roual Galloway

it's probably worth mentioning that Omar-S is on at midnight and that the
club will reach capacity pretty early.

Alternately Andy Vaz and Geoff White are playing at Run's Background Records
party.

And there's Guerilla Lime Soda @ Cafe 1001 on Sunday with Marco Shuttle,
Nick Craddock and others if you fancy a three-dayer. 8)

So I listened to the clips on emporium and ...plase tell me it
develops into more than what I hear. It's just a kick and bassline for
most of the clip then some voco stuff comes in. does it get better? I'm
asking because omar has in the past just let that loop run and called it
a track (sometimes to great effect though. If that's the case with this
track though, I'm gonna actually buy lunch today.

Agree with you. Me thinks the raw-ness, low-fi-ness or the (apparent)
under-production of Omar-S songs are qualities that attract most people.

Personaly I only like the Oasis #1 and maybe that Omar-S track #8 and U.
Thats all. The rest sounds quite average/standard for me.

Assuming that the track from about 51 minutes in (to the 57 minute mark,
or thereabouts) on Tristan's Hannah's Birthday mix is the Omar-S
Detroit #1, to me that's the best track of the entire mix. Chunky
marching beats and steam train exhaust sounds, gotta love it ...

Yeah dj tools are cool, and can be the real bizness when you drop 'em
right. But I only need so many of them. Not that I don't like it, but
when it comes down to the last few dollars I've got, I tend to hold out
for a solid 3-4 tracker with a couple of really good songs and a tool on
the inside cut. The thing that annoys me about omar on occasion is that
he'll drop an obvious no variety at all tool as a single sided limited
release. Gimme a freeking break. But then what do I know? it's made him
a cult icon and I'm still trying to find a decent usb sound card for my
new laptop. Anyone got any recommendations?

And Tom, you gotta do a straight up dirty tool extravaganza mix for me
cause I like summa your picks (even if I'm too broke to pick them up
myself) and wanna hear them doing some damage man (also because a lot of
them I couldn't imagine doing anything close to damage, but I trust your

you already know how i feel about the music chris, but its not
just the white labels with handwritten info that is whats great.
the guy is totally DIY, sitting in his house with his kids and a
bunch of old drum machines, banging out nasty jacking house music.
its got that spirit of the original house music. i know alot of
people put time and effort into having nice studios, picture
labels, full color jackets, etc and thats cool for them. for me,
house music is like hiphop and punk music. if you look at those
pics that were in XLR8R a couple years back in their chicago issue
of the old house cats in their studios, youd see something that
looks far more like omar-s' setup (you can see it on the CD cover)
than something that looks like alexander kowalski or richie hawtin
being interviewed on native instruments' website. its the look,
the feel, the spirit, the sound, all those things combined. for me
thats why i love his stuff, though of course it all comes down to
the music first since thats all i had to go on while i was banging
out the first records he put out. its like the punk rock of house
music. that hits me hard.

Also found a nice mix of all of these records (2, 2.5, 3 Tonight by DJ
Genesis) at Spirit of House today. See the WMC 2004 - Part 6 - Detroit and
Chicago United Mix - by Michael Fossati.

Piccadilly, Drew. They don't charge that much on postage though. Snap it
up
quick, before it goes for ever...

 Chris.

I have been searching for this piece of vinyl off and on. Recently I
pulled it up on piccadilly but I don't want to pay for shipping and all
from there. Mind if I ask where you got your copy from?

Haven't heard any of them except the Omar S 002 and I think it's great! I
made a discovery the other night by pure accident. The vocal cut, B-side
(labeled Detroit on mine), second song is the entire vocal from this song:

http://www.discogs.com/release/221094

Never heard of it or the artist until a couple nights ago. I picked some
records up from my parents house when I drove down for a visit and I had
this old Street Sounds record with old breakdance songs from the early
80's on it. The only song on the record I was familiar with was 'Din Daa
Daa' until I skipped through this song by Midway. And I thought man I know
that vocal!

Just an interesting tidbit in case this hasn't been discovered or posted
previously...

Yeh, Omar S 002 is wonderful, but I personally like 003 even more. It's
incredible. Hard to categorize this music, sorta basic channel meets deep
moody house. If you see 003 I would not pass it up. I picked it up last week
and have been listening to it daily ever since. 003 is also cool because the
B-side cut runs inside out. By the way I was told by Rick Wilhite that Omar
S 001 is gone.

Anybody got any info on this little gem, picked it up the other
day.

On the run out...rick wilhite, mike huckaby.

Wouyld like to know if there is an 001

i got AOS 2 1/2 actually. never heard of or saw 001 though. 2 1/2
is a dj genesis vocal cut on one side and on the flip an extended
mix of one of the cuts off the omar s 12. good stuff on both
12s. also i just picked up that mike huckaby on deep
transportation today as well as the theo on HP (which i already
had on white for like 4 months!). also also got KDJ 016, the
inside cut id definitely the hotness.
