I think it's still very, very underground, though Metro Area are popular and
commercial DJs have discovered them. The DJs who are playing that sound are
still fairly underground. A few people are inventing new nights around it.
That's the thing in Melbourne - boutique nights with really eccentric music
policies. There is an amazing DJ here called Agent 86 who mixes up electro
with everything rom HMC to Amerie to The Seed by The Roots and his own
electro productions and he scratches and everything. That hybrid style is
the new 'sound' in the underground. He plays RB clubs as DJ Dumb, and
electro as Agent 86. I think ever since the hard minimal sound of techno
fell out of favour people have embraced electro-house. In Melbourne this is
partly because Gasp Entertainment left and stopped doing innovative parties
and the other techno promoters tended to push the hard big room Euro tech
 which people got tired of.
Ministry Of Sound Aust are too busy pimping that revolting Euro-trance, so
 we're safe.

Oh no, I though the mullets were over here!!! We call that commercial house
brand 'mullet house', ha ha! It's commercial house kids here, the rockstar
set, who wear mullets. Classic! There's a style distinct from electroclash
though. It's really hybrid, and far more eclectic.

Re: (313) electro house is taking over in OZ

2003-04-29 Thread alex . bond

It's deffo not just in OZ. I've heard it a little here too.

I think, maybe, that in those sort of 'house' circles, once a sound takes
off, you get quite a few imitators.

and then, amongst the less imaginative DJ's - you tend to get quite a few
following the trend.

e.g. a few years ago, you'd have loads of disco looped house, then the muso
sound of Ibadan ruled the roost, which then made way for more 'techy' house
which was becoming bigger at the time, and now, it looks like everyone goes
jumping on the Metro Area sound - as that recent bootleg testifies. that
sort of scene tends to thrive on new stuff all the time - they need it,
because most of the throw-away c**p they peddle only has a shelf life of a
year before everyone realises it's a load of tosh. The latest worrying
trend is records that sample old Chicago house sounds, and things like DX7
basslines and stuff. It's coming to Ibiza this summer kids, you heard it
here first...

also on this note, I had a listen to a Francois Kevorkian dub mix of Moloko
at the weekend. I quite liked it. But, guess what - it sounds *just* like a
Metro Area track. Maybe without the little melodies so much, but the
overall vibe is Metro Area for sure. Although I'm very sure that Francois
is no imitator - that would be a gross injustice to him - but check it out
and see if you see what I mean...

Alex
