DJ Zapp, Gary Chandler, DJ Godfather and DJ Assault are the ones that
seem to be popping up all the time.

Peace,
Patrick.

They're the most well known ones, definitely. 12 Tech Mob are not well-known
at all but are an underground crew who seriously know what they're doing; it
was a mix-tape of theirs sent to me by a 313er in 1996 that turned me onto
that whole sound.

Second that

www.discod.com

I spoke to him about a month ago or so and he said he was moving to New York to
start up a new company. I guess it will be an all around Ghetto Tek promotional
juggernaut for music, parties, clothing, etc.

RE: [313] Ghetto Tek

2002-08-22 Thread Brendan Nelson
I guess if you expand beyond Detroit you also have the likes of Splack Pack,
Clay D, Disco Rick etc etc etc - the true innovators of booty!

My two cents is that the ghetto tech scene is currently in a similar phase
to drum'n'bass circa 1996/1997 - the old school sound (ie proper booty
bass) was being eclipsed by a newer, faster, more repetitive and
made-for-DJs sound. After a few years of relatively anodyne new drum'n'bass,
the listening audience rediscovered the old stuff which had far more
substance to it than the techstep drum'n'bass fans had been listening to
up until then, and by now drum'n'bass fans are buying old school
compilations in droves.

With ghetto tech, the new trend towards extremely fast DJ-tool records,
eschewing actual raps and verses and so on in favour of looped samples,
reminds me of drum'n'bass moving into the techstep sound in 1997. And,
although this sounds cynical, I'm unsure what the ghetto tech scene is
doing now that Direct Beat co weren't doing 6 or 7 years ago...

I just don't think that in ten years time ghetto tech will sit alongside hip
hop, house and techno as a dance music genre that managed to sustain itself
over the long haul. The more old-school booty sound (Electrofunk/Dance
Mania/Pandisc, from Detroit/Chicago/Miami respectively) will, but a lot of
modern ghetto tech records will be lost in the mists of time imho...
